Ashoka Scholars Programme in Philosophy

Ashoka University offers a year-long Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Studies and Research (DipASR) to students who have completed the three-year Bachelor’s Programme, during which students can take a wide range of elective options across a variety of subjects, as well as gain valuable research experience in specific disciplines. Students must complete 32 credits to graduate from the ASP and may choose to complete an advanced major in a particular discipline or may choose to study subjects across disciplines.

  • Advanced Major Requirements

    To complete an Advanced Major in Philosophy, students must complete the equivalent of 16 courses (96 credits) in Philosophy. These comprise (a) the credits earned by meeting the requirements of the Philosophy Major and (b) 4 additional courses (16 credits).

    (a) The twelve courses required for a Philosophy Major:

    • PHI-1000: Introduction to Philosophy
    • PHI-1060: Symbolic Logic
    • Two courses in the Indian & Non-Western Philosophy category
    • Two courses in the History of Western Philosophy category
    • Three courses from the Contemporary Core category
    • Three Elective courses (any Philosophy course)

    ​​​​​​​Note: No more than 2 cross-listed courses that are offered by non-Philosophy faculty members can count toward the major. There is no cap on the number of cross-listed courses offered by Philosophy faculty members that can count towards the major.

    (b) Any four additional Philosophy courses (16 credits)

    Note: up to 4 credits overall (i.e. credits earned during the undergraduate studies and during the ASP) can come from serving as Teaching Assistant (for 2 credits per course). These credits count towards the Elective category.

  • Capstone Thesis

    A Capstone Thesis is a lengthy research paper (often 15 or more pages) on some topic in philosophy. It is an opportunity for students to learn how to conduct independent research in philosophy and to thoroughly explore a topic they are interested in.

    Students who wish to write a Capstone Thesis should include this information when they register for the ASP (around mid-March of their third year).

    Students must also fill out an ASP Capstone Registration form and secure the approval of their advisor in Spring semester of their third year.

    Requirements for Philosophy Capstone Thesis

    • Enrollment in ASP
      • Most Philosophy Capstone Thesis writers will be Philosophy majors, but a Philosophy major is not required. PPE students and others can write a Philosophy Capstone Thesis in their ASP year if they meet the other requirements
    • Agreement from a permanent (not visiting) Philosophy professor to advise the Capstone Thesis
    • Registration in the Philosophy Capstone Thesis Seminar during both ASP semesters
    • Submission of an annotated bibliography and prospectus at the end of Monsoon semester
    • Submission of thesis draft to second reader partway through Spring semester
    • Submission of thesis final draft at the end of Spring semester

     

More About Ashoka Scholars' Programme

All undergraduates graduating with Bachelor’s Degrees at the end of their third year, or who have completed by that time at least academic 92 credits of their degree programme, are eligible for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Studies and Research programme, also known as the Ashoka Scholars Programme (ASP). Students who need to complete up to 8 credits of their undergraduate degree must do so within the first semester of the ASP. All students who fall into either of these categories must formally apply for admission to the ASP towards the end of the Spring semester of their third year. The exact date will be circulated by the OAA.
