SUMMARY:Biology Colloquium | Antony Merlin Jose
DESCRIPTION:  \nHeredity relies on genome sequence and on regulators assembled at the start of each generation. The diverse regulatory molecules and their arrangements can be parsed into entities\, their sensors\, and the sensed properties to analyze the heritable information in regulatory networks. I will share details of this new framework for heredity\, experiments using the nematode C. elegans that necessitate this view\, and early thoughts on analyzing the heritable regulatory network driving the lac operon. \n

SUMMARY:From Clay tablets to Clay Prize: Journey of the local-global principle in number theory
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Examples of Pythagorean triplets\,\n3\n2 + 42 = 52\n\, 5\n2 + 122 = 132\n\, 242 + 72 = 252\n\, · · ·\nhave been known since the time of the ancient Sumerians. Starting with the theorem of Pythagoras and a beautiful proof attributed to Baudhayana (200 years before Pythagoras)\, we will describe the general\nformula to get all Pythagorean triplets.\nWe will next discuss how to solve more general quadratic equations using geometry\, making use of stereographic projections. We will also relate it to the famous t = tan(θ/2) substitution used in integrating trignometric functions.\nThis leads us to a theorem of Legendre and the beginnings of the localglobal principle in number theory. We conclude by stating some open questions. The talk should be accessible to advanced school students.
