SUMMARY:College Readiness Programme for Neurodiverse Stude
DESCRIPTION:After a successful run of the College Readiness Program in June – July 2021\, the Office of Learning Support (OLS) hosted the second edition of its College Readiness Program. A 3-part virtual learning series designed exclusively for high school students with specific learning and physical disabilities\, this program aimed to equip them with all the necessary skills to gear up for higher education. It spanned across three Saturdays of January 2022\, and invited participation from neurodiverse students in high school\, their parents and professionals. The idea was to offer an interactive platform to these stakeholders to come together and share ideas and knowledge on disability inclusion in higher education.  \nThe program was divided into three modules\, which covered topics such as the importance of self-awareness\, navigating college applications\, job opportunities\, using assistive technology to facilitate higher education journey\, accessibility\, creating a support system\, and the need to self-advocate for one’s needs. The speakers consisted of eminent experts from the field\, parents who have supported their wards’ journeys and neurodiverse students who have braved the education system which does not work in their favour. They all came together to conduct specific sessions that addressed questions of other students\, parents and professionals who are in the pursuit of higher education\, and offered practical strategies to aid their college preparation. \nThrough this program\, the OLS was able to build a safe space for the participants to share their experiences and learn from each other. The program saw active and enthusiastic participation from students\, parents and professionals\, which made it the huge success that it was. It gave them a forum to build networks and support each other in their journeys\, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The OLS is deeply appreciative of the time spent with the participants to learn and understand the situation of students with disabilities in India and move a step further towards preparing neurodiverse learners for higher education. The third edition of this program is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2022. \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:A classical random reinforcement model viewed differently!
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  In this talk\, we will start by explaining a classical random reinforcement model introduced by Pólya back in 1920 which is widely known as the Pólya’s balanced urn scheme. We will then indicate several unrelated examples can be thought as following Pólya’s  model provided we allow ourselves a novel infinite dimensional generalization. After indicating the difficulties which arise due to absence of good algebraic techniques to deal with infinite dimensional matrices (or appropriate linear operators)\, we will explain a new probabilistic technique to handle the infinite dimensional generalization. We shall define a novel stochastic process which will turn out to be Markov with respect to a new type of “time” parameter\, which instead of deterministic and unidirectional\, will be random and have a tree-type structure. We shall show that this new process and the infinite dimensional generalization of Pólya’s balanced urn scheme are same in law. This will enable us to derive fairly general scaling limits for the infinite dimensional scheme and show that classical results can be easily derived without much difficulties and completely avoiding algebraic techniques. Moreover\, we will show that apparently unrelated problems arising from a variety of different fields such as combinatorics\, statistical physics and statistics\, can be solved by using this new generalization. \n[The talk will be based on several works done in the last few years. Some of which are joint work with Debleena Thacker\, University of Bath\, UK and Svante Jonson\, Uppsala University\, Sweden] \nYouTube Live-Streaming Link: https://youtu.be/00JA5TwjrtE \nTo be informed of all seminars of the Mathematics department\,  please write to math.seminars@ashoka.edu.in \nAshoka Mathematics YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaTCrA79FLSxwfBlJCTS9-YKd7N7h9Ejl

SUMMARY:Book Discussion with Rukmini S
DESCRIPTION:What do numbers tell us about India? Data is aplenty but access is restricted and understanding remains limited. Rukmini S.\, a data journalist with nearly two decades of field experience tries to clear the picture with her book “Whole Numbers and Half Truths”. \nThe Centre for Economic Data and Analysis\, Ashoka University brings you a discussion on the book between the author and Ashwini Deshpande\, Gautam I. Menon\, and Gilles Verniers; academics who have helped shape our understanding of socio-economic\, political and scientific changes with the help of data. \nJoin us to see how numbers can help build a nuanced picture of the world we live in. \nTuesday\, 18th January\, 6:00 PM IST onwards \nZoom Registration Link: https://bit.ly/31EmkJy \nThe discussion will be followed by a Q&A session
