SUMMARY:Inclusion with Dignity: A Discussion with Vineet Saraiwala
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy\, in collaboration with the Office of Learning Support\, organised an interactive session with Vineet Saraiwala\, Founder & CEO of Atypical Advantage\, India's first talent management platform to hire talent\, find jobs\, buy product & art made by persons with disabilities.  \nThe aim of the session was to engage in real-life case study discussions around various social challenges arising from the lack of inclusive policy-making and socially conscious thinking. \nA live recording of the session can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-vH5kfp-l4

SUMMARY:Biology Colloquium | Anindya Dutta
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  The first part of the talk will be about hundreds of thousands of small extrachromosomal circles of DNA (eccDNA) that the lab discovered in normal cells and cancers.  This suggests a new form of genomic instability.  We now know that these circles can regulate gene expression and that they are a by-product of chromosomal Double-strand Break repair.  Understanding the generation and maintenance of the eccDNA will enable us to decrease eccDNA in cancers where they are the vehicles of oncogene amplification.  I will also talk about my laboratory’s long standing investigations on how DNA replication\, a critical process in the maintenance of genome stability\, is regulated in cancer cells to show how this information can be useful for new cancer therapies and end by showing that models of DNA replication initiation that have been standard in the field for three decades may need some revisions. \nSpeaker's Bio: Dr. Dutta did his medical degree at Christian Medical College\, Vellore\, India\, his Ph.D. from the Rockefeller University\, and postdoctoral training with Bruce Stillman at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.  After a short residency in Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, he became faculty member in Pathology at Harvard Medical School.  In 2003 he moved to become the Harry Byrd Professor at the University of Virginia where he was Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics.  In 2018 he moved to be Chair of Genetics at the Heersink School of Medicine\, University of Alabama at Birmingham. \n\nHis research interests cover genomic instability in cancer cells and noncoding RNAs in differentiation and cancer. His laboratory identified many of the replication initiation proteins in human cells\, used genomics technology to identify hundreds of origins of replication in human chromosomes\, discovered a major mechanism by which human cells prevent over-replication of their DNA\, and identified a novel class of circular DNA present in normal mammalian cells His laboratory also works on long and short noncoding that regulate cancer cell proliferation and skeletal myoblast differentiation and identified a novel family of short RNAs called tRFs. He has trained over forty scientists who continue research in academia or industry and he has received the following honors: Elected Fellow of the AAAS\, Ranbaxy Award for studies on genome instability\, the Outstanding Investigator Award of the American Society for Investigative Pathology and the Distinguished Scientist Award of the University of Virginia.

SUMMARY:Coffee and More...!
DESCRIPTION:In this CAM we focus on interpersonal love\, in particular on the romantic form of love\, and the challenges brought by various kinds of uncertainties. The central question is: How should one understand ‘love’ while also acknowledging certain constraints like uncertainty (of future\, of what the other person feels about “me''\, of the external circumstances of the larger world et cetera)\, indefiniteness of long-distances and ambiguities of online dating and communication? For instance\, separated by physical and “social” distance\, lovers are touch-deprived\, and eye-contact on zoom might not be seen as ‘real’. Moreover\, what exacerbates the problem of uncertainty is that even emotions/feelings about the other are not always under our control\, and they may fade.  \nHow does one come to terms and reconcile with the two things: love and uncertainty? There also remains the inevitable question “where do I see this going?”\, whether in a budding or established relationship. How do we navigate this dilemma?  \n  \nPotential Questions / Concerns / Queries that could be addressed in the session:  \nLong-distance relationships\, online dating as well as uncertainty used to surround romantic love even before the pandemic. Has the pandemic brought any particular challenges with respect to one’s aspirations\,  practice of romantic love? \nWhat are certain effective ways to understand\, communicate and practice ‘loving’ (and how do we characterize it?) in long-distances? \nWhat could be helpful ways to think about various kinds of challenges\, moments of suffering and despair that the uncertainty and distance could bring to one's love life? \nDoes the persistent uncertainty of our conventional forms of mutual love\, for instance\, demand a conceptual make-over of how people should create expectations with respect to their affairs of love and relationships with potential or current-lovers? \nThrough this Coffee and More session\, we hope to explore these sorts of questions and potentially know helpful and interesting ways to think about the problems of love and uncertainty. \n  \nAbout the speaker:  Raja Rosenhagen is currently Assistant Professor of Philosophy\, Head of the Philosophy Department\, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Ashoka University in Sonipat\, Haryana (India). He obtained his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh\, USA in 2018. He has 15 yrs of teaching\, mentoring\, and general administrative experience at University level in Germany & US. His areas of interest are Philosophy of Science\, Philosophy of Mind and Perception\, Philosophy of Love\, Metaphysics\, Epistemology\, Moral Perception\, and Indian Philosophy. \n  \nAbout the series: Coffee and More…! aims to create a safe haven for conversations where students can freely engage with issues and challenges they face in their everyday lives. These conversations would range from fitness and nutrition\, safety on substance\, sleep problems to safe sex practices\, reproductive health\, sexual harassment\, and much more. By inviting experts in these fields\, the series aims to conduct professional yet comfortable and interactive sessions so as to enable students to make informed choices. Only when we demystify and de-stigmatize these conversations\, will we be able to ensure that residence halls become a safe and proactive community space that can bring opportunities for a conversation to listen\, understand and enable students facing real-life challenges and situations.
