SUMMARY:Autism Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, April is observed as World Autism Awareness Month\, with an aim to support the creation of fulfilling lives and relationships for persons with autism. This month also acts as a marker of the work that has been done so far\, and the road that lies ahead of us in our pursuit of enabling the inclusion and acceptance of persons with autism in our university. To observe this month\, the OLS planned a series of events and activities to promote and foster feelings of warmth and acceptance among the Ashoka community\, specifically in the context of appreciating and accepting neurodiversity around us. \nAs a kickstart\, the OLS put up posters across the campus listing a few ways in which we can extend a hand of friendship to our peers who are on the autism spectrum. The idea was to encourage the Ashoka community to pause for a moment and engage with the poster to understand and implement some of the inclusive practices highlighted through it\, so as to make our neurodiverse peers feel more at home at Ashoka. \n \nOn April 12\, the OLS had invited two organizations\, Action for Autism (AFA) and Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (AADI)\, for the Spring Haat organized by the Student Life Office. Both the organizations set up their stalls\, showcased the products made by people with autism and other disabilities\, and engaged with various students\, staff\, and faculty at the stalls. Along with this\, there was an interactive activity organized to explore the common understanding of autism amongst the Ashoka community members and put down questions that might have about it. The purpose was to initiate a conversation around autism and neurodiversity on the Ashoka campus. Later\, the responses were collated\, the Ashoka community was encouraged to reflect on their connotations\, and common questions were addressed for the purpose of increasing awareness about autism. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nThe OLS encourages those curious to learn more about autism or create inclusive spaces around themselves to reach out to the office\, for the month may have drawn to a close\, but the dialogue on autism must continue. \n

SUMMARY:Masking it all up: Two Soft Matter solutions for the COVID-19 pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: I discuss two inter-related soft matter experiments I developed to mitigate mask shortages during early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. I first learned of N95 masks in February 2020  that they present the only mask design capable of protecting against SARS-Cov-2. Academic curiosity initially led me to study their functionality\, and when masks became scarce during the pandemic's early days\, I attempted manufacturing N95 masks. In the first part of the talk I discuss how\, starting about mid March 2020\, I built a cotton candy machine using a drill and beer cans to fabricate the dielectric fabrics used in N95 masks with discarded plastic containers as my input material. In the second part\, I'll discuss how I took my microwave oven apart to construct a corona discharge system to electrocharge these dielectric fabrics to achieve the N95 filtration standard. \nBio: Mahesh grew in India and received his Bachelors' in Computer Engineering from the University of Madras (1998). Following a two year stint in the Indian software industry\, he returned to academia and earned his MS Electrical Engineering (2002)\, MS Physics (2004) and PhD Physics (2006)\, all from the University of Pittsburgh. Following postdoctoral terms at Los Alamos National Laboratory (2006 – 2009) and Harvard University (2009 – 2011)\, he was appointed Assistant Professor at OIST Graduate University\, Japan starting Summer 2012 and was promoted to Associate Professor in summer 2018. Since 2018\, he also holds an adjunct appointment with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste\, Italy. Mahesh's primary research interests lie in Experimental Nonlinear\, Non-equilibrium\, and Soft Matter Physics with minor contributions in theory and numerics. His research portfolio is organized along four overlapping themes: Statistical Physics of Renewable & Sustainable Energy\, Quantitative Life Sciences\, Hydrodynamics\, and Amorphous Media. His serious non-scientific interests include (Japanese and Islamic) art and hiking.
