SUMMARY:Heterostructures based on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides for energy applications.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n\n2D nanomaterials are an exciting class of materials in themselves amongst the nanomaterials. The sheer nature of these materials being confined along one dimension and with a huge surface area in the other two dimensions leads to very exciting properties. Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanosheets with defect-rich and vertically aligned edges are highly advantageous for various catalytic applications. Synthesis of TMDs using the colloidal techniques opens various possibilities to tune the electronic and optical properties of these 2D materials. As an example\, we choose MoSe2 nanosheets that have plenty of defects. The defect sites are responsible for adsorption on the surface thereby yielding excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and other catalytic activities on the surface. Further\, these defects can be employed as seeding points to grow other materials on them. Cu2S in these defect sites leads to a Type-II semiconductor heterojunction that allows for charge separation and therefore the MoSe2-Cu2S forms a superior material for generation of photocurrent and water splitting. Now even heterojunctions of MoSe2\, a hexagonal crystal with CsPbBr3 – a perovskite have been enabled by use of a linker molecule 4 – aminothiophenol. Enhanced photocurrents are obtained with such a nanoheterostructure. This methodology further opens up avenues for forming heterostructures with large lattice mismatches and can therefore be of great potential use. Another method to explore heterostructures is to use two materials that form nanosheets and therefore are capable of coming close by means of van der Waals interactions. MoSe2-SnS is one such nanoheterostructure that we have also fabricated.

SUMMARY:Ikroop Sandhu in conversation with Arpita Das
DESCRIPTION:The Undergraduate Writing Programme is delighted to announce that our speaker series\, Track Changes\, is back with another event. This time\, our guest is Ikroop Sandhu\, an author and artist from Dharamshala\, in conversation with Arpita Das. The event will be held at the Library Café on Thursday\, 24th November\, from 6.30 pm onwards. \nSpeaker bio: After a BA in Philosophy from Lady Shri Ram College she studied animation from Vancouver Film School. As an artist\, her interest lies in an individual’s capacity for knowledge gathering\, storytelling and reflecting. She is currently teaching storytelling and animation at the Indian Institute of Art and Design\, New Delhi. Her work has been published in three graphic narrative anthologies and her first graphic novel—a biography of Bhagat Singh titled ‘Inquilab Zindabad’\, was published earlier this year.  \nAbout the book: Far from the gun-toting\, swaggering young man represented in pop culture\, Bhagat Singh was a fearless student leader who spent his time reading\, writing\, debating\, strategising and executing plans while working alongside his comrades. Detailing the life of a national icon\, Inquilab Zindabad maps Bhagat Singh’s journey toward revolutionising the Indian freedom struggle and the people and events that influenced this quest. While Inquilab Zindabad sheds light on his family members\, friends\, comrades and secret benefactors\, excerpts from Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary writings on religion\, caste and freedom are also present throughout the book. Informing the reader of his astute observations on politics and revolutionary life\, the lessons from his life and writings are more relevant today than ever before. \nWe’re delighted that Ikroop will be joining us for the evening\, and hope that you will come and join us too!
