SUMMARY:Collective Moral Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Moral responsibility is usually associated with the behavior of individuals. Yet\, in popular discourse\, we often talk about the moral responsibility of groups\, such as nations\, political parties\, and even leaders (in plural). Drawing on some writings in philosophy and basic concepts from game theory\, it is possible to give formal shape to the concept of collective moral responsibility. In my lecture I hope to present some of these models and draw attention to the paradoxes that they give rise to. I shall also touch on the larger theme of prior agreements and conventions to improve group behavior. \n \nAbout the Speaker:  Kaushik Basu is Professor of Economics and the Carl Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University\, USA. He was formerly the President of the International Economic Association (2017-2020)\, Chief Economist of the World Bank (2012-16) and Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India (2009-2012). Professor Basu received his PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and has published extensively in the areas of Development Economics\, Industrial Organization\, Game Theory and Welfare Economics. In 2008\, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India. Professor Basu has held visiting positions at several prestigious universities such as Princeton\, the London School of Economics\, Harvard\, and M.I.T. He was Professor of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics\, where in 1992 he founded the Centre for Development Economics and was its first Executive Director. He is also a founding member of the Madras School of Economics.
