SUMMARY:Visual Arts Colloquium | Sreejata Roy | 22 Sep 2023 | 1:30 PM | AC04- 009 (LR)
DESCRIPTION:Department of Visual Arts \ninvites you to  \nColloquium Series  \n(Monsoon 2023) \nwith  \nSreejata Roy  \nAdjunct Faculty \n Visual Arts Department\, Ambedkar University\, Delhi \nFriday 22 September 2023\,  1:30 PM to 2:30 PM \nVenue: AC04-009 (LR) \n  \n Shifting Contemporary Art Practices in India – A Praxis in Socially Engaged Art                                                                             \n The presentation focuses on my current Socially Engaged Art (SEA) practice\, initiated in the metropolis of Delhi\, India in 2007 and continuing into the present. My praxis is undertaken with ethnically diverse marginalized communities in disenfranchised localities\, through projects situated at widely separated sites across the city. Directly intervening within the challenging physical spaces of these densely populated working-class neighborhoods\, my cross-genre\, cross-media\, gender-focused practice focuses on how\, via creative engagement\, young people and women individually and collectively attempt to inscribe/reclaim personal socio-cultural spaces within their existent environments. The new spatial dynamics\, new subjectivities\, new networks\, and new tropes of social inclusion/exclusion evident within the more democratic\, participatory aesthetic paradigms underpinning these projects\, are the concerns of my exploration as an artist within the contemporary discourse of Socially Engaged Art (SEA) in India.   \nDelhi-based artist\, Sreejata Roy completed her Mphil from Coventry School of Art and Design\, Coventry University\, UK (20050\, and has been a doctoral student in the Ph.D. Program at the University of\nTechnology Sydney (UTS) since 2018. At present her thesis is in the final examination process. \nAs an artist interested in community-related projects\, Sreejata has been using classical/conventional\, mixed\, and digital media to produce various art forms\, engaging with the community. Roy's current art practice in Delhi (2007-present) involves working with young women for over a decade through Socially Engaged Art practice\, connecting the ideas of public spaces in many sprawling and congested areas and marginalized colonies inhabited by generations of migrants from the neighboring rural territory. Roy was awarded a 'Public Art' grant from the Foundation of Indian Contemporary Art (FICA) in 2008 and completed reshaping a community park in one of the marginalized neighborhoods. Apart from FICA\, she has been awarded other prestigious scholarships in India\, including a National Scholarship\, from the Ministry of Defence\, New Delhi\, 1993\, Community Art Grant\, Khoj for International Artist Association\, 2008-2009 & 2014-2016\, Art- Reach India Community Art Grant 2015-2020\, SEA Grant\, Kiran Nadar Museum\, Delhi\, 2016- 2020. Internationally\, she was awarded the Pro Helvetia Swiss Cultural Scholarship to work in Basel\, in 2011\, IASPIS\, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee's International Program for Visual Artists\, Malmo\, Sweden in 2017\, including Overseas Research Scholarship UK\,2000-2004\, Presidency Scholarship\, International Research Scholarship\, University of Technology\, Sydney\, Australia\, 2018-2021. \nWE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU THERE \nDepartment of Visual Arts \nAshoka University \n  \n

SUMMARY:Understanding the force-directed mechanisms of talin interactions at single-molecule resolution.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  \nMechanical cross-talk between talin-centered adhesions to the extracellular matrix plays a crucial role in cell migration and polarity. On the cytoplasmic side\, the talin-dependent interactome network coordinates between the actin network and intermediate filament\, controlling the adhesion maturation. However\, these adhesion processes are dependent on alternating states of talin protein: autoinhibited and active extended form. While autoinhibited talin mostly exhibits domain-domain interactions\, their active extended form interacts with different binding proteins while transducing the force. Additionally\, due to actomyosin contractility\, these complexes are continuously under mechanical stress and are critical determinants of adhesion turnover. It is well-established that talin domains exhibit different mechanical responses that also reflect into their force-dependent interactions with other focal adhesion (FA) partners. However\, less studies have been performed on how these interactions affect their folding mechanics\, mechanical stability\, and conformational stiffness. Although few studies have reported talin interactions with vinculin and KANK1 under the physiological force range; however\, interactions with other adhesion stimuli including ionic strength and adhesion-targeting drugs have not been studied much. This is due to the technological limitations which could monitor multiple molecular properties during protein interactions in real-time. \nHere\, we have developed microfluidic magnetic tweezers that allow us to quantify these fundamental properties and their dynamic changes in varying chemical environments on a single protein specimen. Using this methodology\, we monitored the conformational changes and the folding dynamics of the talin protein under varying salt conditions. The folding dynamics of the talin protein is strongly force-dependent and thus\, its mechanical stability is a critical factor for the adhesion assembly. Additionally\, Hsp70 and Hsp40 as linchpin FA-resident proteins\, have been observed to shift the talin folding mechanics towards the lower force range and thus\, mechanically destabilizing the protein. Interestingly\, we have shown that talin possesses a unique bi-modal unfolding distribution under mechanical force: a well-characterized low force population at ~9 pN and a high force population at ~30 pN. With different drugs\, a specific variation has been observed in this force distribution: tamoxifen exhibits a strong biphasic effect on talin mechanical stability\, while cyanidin-3-O-glucoside promotes its steady increase with the concentration. However\, another drug letrozole has been found to exhibit a much weaker biphasic effect than tamoxifen. To explain this drug-modulated talin mechanical stability\, we have performed computational studies and observed that Cyanidin 3-O-glucoside forms highest intermolecular H bonds\, followed by that through letrozole and tamoxifen binding. Overall\, these single-molecule insights will provide an unprecedented mechanical behaviour of talin that will present a novel perspective for its diverse force-dependent interactions to control the adhesion dynamics. \nAbout the speaker:  \nSoham has been a Ph.D. scholar at Ashoka University since 2019. He obtained his B.Sc and M.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Calcutta. His research interest lies in studying the force-dependent interactions of talin protein and how it regulates their folding mechanics and associated physical properties.

SUMMARY:Why Evolutionary Thinking is Indispensable in Understanding the Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactio
DESCRIPTION:Title: In Health and In Sickness: Why Evolutionary Thinking is Indispensable in Understanding the Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions and Immune Strategies? \nAbstract: \nSince pathogens are ubiquitous\, an effective immune system is critical for the host to survive pathogenic challenges. However\, understanding how such an immune system evolves and influences the outcome of host-pathogen interactions is challenging because of its complex interactions with factors as diverse as various life-history trade-offs\, physiological effects\, and metabolic changes to the population’s history with pathogens and ecosystems. For example\, since immune responses are cytotoxic\, damaging DNA\, cells and organs\, how could hosts still evolve efficiently against pathogens? Also\, how the evolvability of immunity and pathogen resistance is modulated by environmental variations or life-history conditions that impose added physiological costs and energetic burdens on the hosts. Finally\, how do these impacts translate from organisms to molecular levels? In my talk\, I will briefly discuss how these overarching questions have motivated me to build a unique multidisciplinary research program in the Indian research ecosystem to identify various costs and contexts of immunity and host-pathogen interactions that could drive natural variation in organismal health and pathogen resistance.  \n
