SUMMARY:Dyslexia Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Dyslexia Awareness Month \n  \nOctober is celebrated as “Dyslexia Awareness Month''. To mark this month\, every year\, the Office of Learning Support (OLS) organized events to raise awareness and spark conversations about dyslexia\, learning\, and neurodiversity within the Ashoka campus. This year\, OLS joined forces with various student clubs and societies to amplify their endeavors\, engaging students\, staff\, and faculty through creative and enjoyable activities. Throughout the month\, OLS carefully planned a series of events designed to involve the entire Ashoka community in various ways\, with the goal of sharing essential facts about dyslexia and nurturing a culture of acceptance for neurodiversity. \n  \n

SUMMARY:International Conference on River Islands Redefining the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:The proposed two-day conference is organized by the departments of Sociology and Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Ashoka University\, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur\, and The Australian National University. It is aimed at assembling the river island narratives\, discussing and critically interrogating concepts and empirics\, and enabling a meaningful conversation between early career researchers and senior\, established scholars in the domain. The immediate output will be a special issue/section on river islands in an international\, peer-reviewed journal that will include six to eight selected conference papers\, with co-authorship being encouraged between junior and senior scholars (also adhering to gender inclusion and geographical representation principles). \nThe long-term goal however is to initiate a larger\, more systematic conversation on river islands\, across the global North and South\, and promote interdisciplinary scholarly and action research on these hybrid ecologies through global partnership\, facilitating cross-sectoral dialogues and collaborations. \nCall for Papers \nSession Themes:\n1. Islands\, Anthropocene and decoloniality\n2. Islands\, place-making\, and the everyday\n3. Infrastructure\, “development\,” and sustainability of river islands\n4. Islands as spaces of disaster and vulnerability\n5. Island (id)entities along shifting times\n6. Islands in relations: rethinking “islandness” in a globalized world \nPlease submit your abstract (between 350-500 words) by July 25\, and the full paper by Sep 30. You can submit your abstract as well as write to us for any further query at: riverislandsconference@ashoka.edu.in \nFor more information click here

SUMMARY:Sovereigns of the Sea. Omani ambition in the age of Empire
DESCRIPTION:The talk puts the spotlight on the Asian elites who became integral to the functioning of the Indian Ocean in the age of Empire. It weaves the story of a family of Indian Ocean Sultans into the broader tapestry of world history.  Putting the micro-optic on the Omani Sultans and their century long saga it retells the story of the Ocean carved as a political space where Asian and European aspirations competed. It shows how the Sultans made the most of Europeans who made a bee line to the Western Indian Ocean hungry for slaves\, cloves\, and ivory.  They leveraged themselves to European economic concerns and politics\, remained heeled in their own cultural tradition\, and articulated their political ambitions. The talk forefronts these Asian imperial ambitions in the Ocean with important implications for the writing of global histories.

SUMMARY:Dissecting the role of ADGRG6 N-glycosylation in tissue development and cancer.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  \nADGRG6 or GPR126 is an adhesion G-protein coupled receptor (aGPCR) known to play important roles in the embryonic development of the heart\, nervous system and inner ear. It is very well known that the functions of many proteins are determined by post-translational modifications. Glycosylation of proteins is an important phenomenon which can modulate protein activity\, stability and folding. ADGRG6 has many N-glycosylation sites in its N-terminal fragment (NTF). Preliminary data from our lab shows that N-glycosylation of ADGRG6 NTF regulates cleavage at furin and GPCR proteolytic site (GPS)\, cellular localization\, surface expression and G-protein signalling. Based on these observations\, I hypothesize that ADGRG6 glycosylation can be implicated in angiogenesis and tumour cell invasion in cancer. \nAbout the Speaker: \nAnandhu is currently pursuing his PhD under the guidance of Dr. Kasturi Pal in the Department of Biology at Ashoka University. His research interest lies in understanding the involvement of GPCRs in cancer. Before joining Ashoka\, he completed his Masters in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology from Bharathiar University (Coimbatore). \n
