SUMMARY:Dyslexia Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Dyslexia Awareness Month \n  \nOctober is celebrated as “Dyslexia Awareness Month''. To mark this month\, every year\, the Office of Learning Support (OLS) organized events to raise awareness and spark conversations about dyslexia\, learning\, and neurodiversity within the Ashoka campus. This year\, OLS joined forces with various student clubs and societies to amplify their endeavors\, engaging students\, staff\, and faculty through creative and enjoyable activities. Throughout the month\, OLS carefully planned a series of events designed to involve the entire Ashoka community in various ways\, with the goal of sharing essential facts about dyslexia and nurturing a culture of acceptance for neurodiversity. \n  \n

SUMMARY:International Conference on River Islands Redefining the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:The proposed two-day conference is organized by the departments of Sociology and Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Ashoka University\, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur\, and The Australian National University. It is aimed at assembling the river island narratives\, discussing and critically interrogating concepts and empirics\, and enabling a meaningful conversation between early career researchers and senior\, established scholars in the domain. The immediate output will be a special issue/section on river islands in an international\, peer-reviewed journal that will include six to eight selected conference papers\, with co-authorship being encouraged between junior and senior scholars (also adhering to gender inclusion and geographical representation principles). \nThe long-term goal however is to initiate a larger\, more systematic conversation on river islands\, across the global North and South\, and promote interdisciplinary scholarly and action research on these hybrid ecologies through global partnership\, facilitating cross-sectoral dialogues and collaborations. \nCall for Papers \nSession Themes:\n1. Islands\, Anthropocene and decoloniality\n2. Islands\, place-making\, and the everyday\n3. Infrastructure\, “development\,” and sustainability of river islands\n4. Islands as spaces of disaster and vulnerability\n5. Island (id)entities along shifting times\n6. Islands in relations: rethinking “islandness” in a globalized world \nPlease submit your abstract (between 350-500 words) by July 25\, and the full paper by Sep 30. You can submit your abstract as well as write to us for any further query at: riverislandsconference@ashoka.edu.in \nFor more information click here

SUMMARY:Ccn2 a profibrotic to proregenerative molecule: A change in perception.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHistorically\, communication network factor 2a (Ccn2a)\, an extracellular matrix (ECM) molecule\, was thought to play a role in the progression of fibrotic diseases (Jaffa et al.\, 2008; Mori et al.\, 1999; Tamatani et al.\, 1998). However\, work in recent years from our and other groups suggests that Ccn2 induces spinal cord (Mokalled et al.\, 2016)\, heart (Mukherjee et al.\, 2021)\, and pancreatic beta cell (Riley et al.\, 2015) regeneration. Our recent study identified Ccn2 as an intervertebral disc pro-regenerative molecule\, published as a cover page article in Development (https://doi.org/10.1242/dev.201036). I will present a mixture of published and unpublished data about the role of Ccn2 in the intervertebral disc and heart regeneration in zebrafish. \nAbout the Speaker:\nChinmoy Patra is a Scientist at Agharkar Research Institute\, Pune\, India. Following his doctoral training at the Dept. of Cardiac Development and Remodelling\, MPI for Heart and Lung Research\, Germany\, he obtained post-doctoral training with Dr. Didier Stainier at the Dept. of Developmental Genetics\, MPI for Heart and Lung Research\, Germany. He started his independent research group in 2014 at Agharkar Research Institute\, Pune\, India. He is the recipient of the Max-Planck Partner group award\, DBT/Wellcome Trust IA Intermediate fellowship\, JSPS invitation fellowship\, etc. Patra Laboratory focuses on extracellular matrix and adhesion GPCRs in development\, regeneration\, and diseases using zebrafish as an experimental system.

SUMMARY:Irreducibility results in dynamical moduli spaces.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nConsider the moduli space\, $\\mathcal{M}_{d}$\, of degree $d \\geq 2$ polynomials over $\\C$\, with a marked critical point. Given $k \\geq 0\,\\; p$ an odd prime\, we show that the set $\\Sigma_{k\,1\,p}$ of conjugacy classes of degree $p$ polynomials\, for which the marked critical point is strictly $(k\,1)$-preperiodic\, is an irreducible set under Zariski topology on $\\mathcal{M}_{p}$. Irreducibility of these sets was conjectured by Milnor\, and has been proved for $p=3$ by Buff\, Epstein and Koch.\n     \nWe prove that the subspaces of $\\Sigma_{k\,1\,p}$\, that arise by varying the ramification index of the marked critical point all the way up to the unicritical case\, are all irreducible subvarieties. Finally\, using the irreducibility of $\\Sigma_{k\,1\,p}$ we give a new and short proof of the fact that the set of all unicritical points of $\\Sigma_{k\,1\,p}$ form one Galois orbit under the action of absolute Galois group of $\\Q$. \nAbout the speaker : \nNiladri Patra is a Ph.D. student in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research\, Mumbai. He is working under Prof. C. S. Rajan. His areas of interest include arithmetic dynamics\, complex dynamics and number theory. He completed his B.Math(2017) and M.Math(2019) from Indian Statistical institute\, Bangalore centre.
