SUMMARY:Economics Department Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, November 1st\, 2023. \nTime: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \nVenue: Zoom (Click HERE to join) \nSpeaker: Naila Shofia \nTitle: “Wearing your religion: Evidence on employers’ preferences in Indonesia” \nAbstract: In collaboration with one of the largest job portals in Indonesia\, we examine the effect of displaying gendered religious identity — headscarves for women and beards for men — on labor market outcomes. Applying a modified version of the incentivized resume rating method in a field experiment involving more than 1\,200 employers\, we find that displaying religious identity reduces the overall rating\, the probability of being interviewed\, as well as the amount of salary offered to candidates. The penalties of headscarf and beard are very similar in magnitude in most labor market outcomes\, except for the salary offer. In a separate beliefs-elicitation experiment\, we find that candidates wearing religious attributes are indeed perceived to be more religious\, but they are also ranked lower by employers in a number of quality and personality traits important in the workplace. \nWe look forward to having you with us.

SUMMARY:INVITATION | VA Colloquium by Professor BV Suresh | Wed\, 1 Nov 23 | 5 PM | AC02 -002
DESCRIPTION:Department of Visual Arts Invites you to the VA Colloquium \nLanguage in the High Key Materiality\, Affect and Contemporaneity. \nIntermedia Installations and Moving Images of Suresh BV \nWhile our cities have expanded since independence without adequate public infrastructure and near blindness to urban planning\, over the last decade\, our public sphere has taken an inherently acerbic turn. In these years\, we have been witnessing extreme ideological polarization\, mass unemployment\, crippling poverty and inequality.  We’ve arrived at a juncture where we seem to be propelled into an irreparable dystopian machinery. \nThe vast cesspool of the tireless city conceals and reveals its fault lines while in perpetual state of crisis.  The everyday urban experience is rife with humiliation\, fear\, violence\, bigotry and sectarianism at every street corner and in every moment of civic life. \n\\Suresh BV’s practice has been taking nuanced cognition of the shifting material and technological landscape of Indian cities\, its popular culture and the (low)tech media landscape. In the last two decades\, he has produced works that engage with questions of urban detritus of our cities and what can be seen as encounters from this moment of unplanned urbanization. \nPioneering the language of intermedia installation\, he has been crafting a new realism based on the fragments of found objects\, kinetic assemblages\, artistic tropes of satire and melancholy and political symbols as new metaphors. His work has created paradigmatic shifts\, challenging the accepted aesthetic conventions of collectors\, galleries and museums defining contemporary Indian art market today. \nIn this colloquium\, Prof. Suresh will delve on some of his processes and large scale installations.  \nWednesday\, 1st November 2023 \nVenue – AC02 # 002 | Time 5pm \nOver a career spanning several decades Suresh BV has created several paradigmatic works\, has taught as a full time faculty at MS University\, Baroda and  at the Department of Fine Arts\, S.N. School\, University of Hyderabad. \nHe holds an MA in Painting from Royal College of Art(1985-87)\, London after having obtained a post-diploma and diploma in Painting from Faculty of Fine Arts\, M.S.University Baroda(1979-85) and formal art training from Ken School of Arts\, Bangalore(1976-78). \nSuresh has held several solo shows namely\, ‘Canes of Wrath’ at Kochi Muziris Biennale (2018)\, ‘Chronicles of Silence’ (2015) at Vadehra Art Gallery\, New Delhi and Sumukha Gallery\, Bangalore\, ‘Khamoshi Ki Daastan’ (2015) at Faculty of Fine Arts\, Baroda\, ‘Facilitating the Beast’ (2006) at Vadehra Art Gallery\, New Delhi. \nHe has participated in international and national group exhibitions which include\, Hong Kong Art Fair\, China\, ‘Destination Asia: Non-Strict Correspondence’ at Almaty\, ‘World Social Forum’ at Nairobi\, and ‘Video Art’\, South Africa\, ‘Aesthetic Bind\, Cabinet Closet Wunderkammer’ at Chemould Gallery\, Mumbai\, ‘Back to School’ at Tao Gallery\, Mumbai and Pallete Gallery\, New Delhi\, ‘Mechanisms of Motion’ at Anant Art\, New Delhi\, ‘Are We Like This Only’ at Vadehra Gallery\, New Delhi. \nSuresh has also done several collaborative projects with fellow artists and theatre practitioners\, illustrated children’s books\, participated in art camps and conducted numerous workshops on video and intermedia arts in colleges and schools. \nHe is currently living in Hyderabad and has been working as Professor at Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication\, Hyderabad Central University. \nLooking forward to having you with us! \nDepartment of Visual Arts  \n
