SUMMARY:Outflows from Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Galaxies often throw out gas in a violent manner. These powerful ‘galactic winds’ are detected in different wavebands\, from radio to optical to X-rays. This phenomenon is intimately connected to a regulatory process by which stars form in galaxies. In the absence of these outflows\, stars would have formed in galaxies more abundantly\, which would have quickly depleted the gas reserve in the universe\, and the universe would have become full of passive and dim galaxies by now. I will talk about how observations\, theoretical calculations and simulations have helped us to understand the gaseous outflows\, and in turn\, how galaxies evolve. \nBio: Prof. Biman Nath is a professor of Astrophysics and Astronomy at Raman Research Institute (RRI)\, Bangalore. He has done his MS/PhD in Astronomy from the University of Maryland\, and Postdoctoral work at Max Planck Institute in Bonn and in IUCAA Pune. He has been in the Raman Research Institute since 1997. He received the Indira Gandhi Award for science popularization from INSA in 2011. His current research interests involve diffuse gas in the universe (intracluster and intergalactic medium) and interaction between galaxies and diffuse gas. \n

SUMMARY:Ashoka Economics Department Seminar | Dr. Abhiroop Mukhopadhyay| 15th November 2023 | 1.40 pm
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, November 15th\, 2023. \nTime: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \nVenue: Online (Click Here to join) \nSpeaker: Dr. Abhiroop Mukhopadhyay \nTitle: “Science on the Move: How Mobile Pedagogy Shapes Human Capital” \nAbstract:  While many developing economies have made progress in providing access to education\, the provision of quality education that delivers life-long learning\, learning- how-to-learn\, and developing the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar circumstances is essentially absent. This is often due to the low capacity and skills of local teachers to break out of the mould of rote education. In this paper\, we explore if an alternate discovery-based pedagogy could be 'transported' to rural settings. In collaboration with the Agastya foundation\, we conduct a randomized controlled trial in public schools in Uttar Pradesh (UP) to evaluate an intervention that provides\, through portable science laboratories\, a pedagogy aimed at a scientific approach to learning. We find that such an intervention can lead to an improvement in students’ personal/behavioural factors\, academic engagement\, and academic/test scores. \nWe look forward to having you with us.

SUMMARY:Cubulating hyperbolic mapping tori.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  \nA group is cubulated if it acts properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex\, which is a generalisation of a product of trees. Some well-known examples are free groups\, surface groups and fundamental groups of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. \nOur setup consists of mapping tori of hyperbolic groups which are again hyperbolic. Two prominent examples are (1) mapping tori of fundamental groups of hyperbolic surfaces over pseudo-Anosov automorphisms\, and (2) mapping tori of free groups over atoroidal automorphisms. Both these classes of groups are known to be cubulated. \nBuilding on these two important results\, and placing them in a unified framework\, I will show that all such groups of our setup are cubulated\, and explain a few consequences of the result. \nThis is joint work with François Dahmani and Jean Pierre Mutanguha. \nAbout the Speaker: \nHe is currently a postdoc at the Technion in Israel\, after completing his PhD at the Université Paris Saclay and He was a postdoctoral stint at TIFR. His research area is geometric group theory\, specifically CAT(0) cube complexes\, hyperbolicity and relative hyperbolicity. Of late\, He is learning the interactive theorem prover Lean after developing an interest in the formalisation of mathematics. \n
