SUMMARY:IR Seminar
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore new trends in the research and historiographical debates about India- India-Pakistan relations by comparing the perspectives of three authors of recent books on the subject. The panel will discuss the changes that have taken place in this field in recent years; why new interdisciplinary and revisionist perspectives are necessary for its development; the reasons for the widespread public interest across the subcontinent about the state of bilateral relations; and predictions about its future. The session shall be informal and interactive\, prioritising student inputs\, and is an opportunity to engage in a wide-ranging conversation about the history and politics of the South Asian region.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The speed at which quantum entanglement between qubits with short range interactions can be generated is limited by the Lieb-Robinson bound. Introducing longer range interactions relaxes this bound and entanglement can be generated at a faster rate. The speed limit for this has been analytically found only for a two-qubit system under the assumption of negligible single qubit gate time. We seek to demonstrate this speed limit experimentally using two superconducting transmon qubits. Moreover\, we aim to measure the increase in this speed limit induced by introducing additional qubits (coupled with the first two). Since the speed up grows with additional entangled qubits\, it is expected to increase as the system size increases. This has important implications for large-scale quantum computing. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Singh is an experimental physicist with research focused on quantum thermal effects and quantum computing. She graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology with an M. S. in Physics in 2006 and received a Ph. D. in Physics from the Pennsylvania State University in 2012. Her Ph. D. thesis was focused on quantum transport in nanowires. She went on to work at Sandia National Laboratories on Quantum Computing as a post-doctoral scholar. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the Colorado School of Mines. At Mines\, her research projects include measurements of spin-orbit coupling in novel materials and thermal effects in superconducting hybrids. She recently received the NSF CAREER award to pursue research in phonon interactions with spin qubits in silicon quantum dots.

SUMMARY:Executive Skill Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Details:\nDate: February 9\, 2024 (Friday)\nTime: 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm\nVenue: Ashoka Campus\, Room: AC02 LR 108 \nPresenters: Children First team \n  \nWhat are Executive Skills?\nExecutive skills\, or executive functions\, encompass cognitive processes such as planning\, organizing\, time management\, behavior regulation\, and adaptability. These skills are vital for goal-directed behavior\, effective problem-solving\, and achieving desired outcomes in various aspects of life. \n  \nWhy are Executive Skills important?\nManaging rigorous academic schedules at Ashoka requires a unique\, sustainable approach to effective time management and efficient coursework handling. With so much happening around campus at all times\, it's easy to get distracted\, which makes tasks more overwhelming. Strengthening executive skills allows us to navigate these challenges and execute tasks more effectively\, working towards our goals more efficiently and striking the right balance that works for us. \n  \nWhat's in Store for You? \nTime Management: Understand the passage of time and exercise conscious control for efficient task execution. \nOrganizational Skills: Plan\, prioritize\, and manage tasks effectively for goal achievement\, and learn how to stick through them. \nSelf-Regulation: Manage and control emotions for resilience and adaptability within Ashoka's distinct academic and social environment. \n\nSecure your spot by registering here!  \nPlease reach out to us if you have any questions. \nLet's make 2024 the year of enhanced executive skills and personal success!

SUMMARY:Understanding Sexual Selection and Domestication in Birds.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kritika Garg is an evolutionary biologist specializing in population genetics and behavioral ecology. She joined Ashoka University as a Ramalingaswami Fellow in 2021. Her lab uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand the evolution of species across time scales. The two major questions the lab is currently working on are \nThe role of sexual selection in shaping the social/mating system and speciation \nUnderstand the genomic legacy of domestication in the Indian subcontinent \nShe obtained her Master’s degree in Genomics from the Madurai Kamaraj University\, after which she persuaded her PhD in Behavioral Ecology at the National Centre for Biological Science under the guidance of Dr. Uma Ramakrishnan. During her PhD\, she combined long-term field-based behavioral data with population genetic data and rigorous statistical modelling to define promiscuity and mating systems of natural populations. She provided one of the rare and earliest evidence of promiscuity in harem forming bats\, while also revealing the importance of flexible mating strategies in wild populations. After this she moved to the National University of Singapore and worked on speciation and biogeography of various avian lineages. Her post-doctoral research focused on the effects of Pleistocene glaciations in shaping the avifauna diversity in South East Asia and Australasia using both fresh as historical museum samples. Prior to joining Ashoka University\, Dr. Garg was a Faculty Fellow at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology\, Bangalore.
