SUMMARY:IR Seminar
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore new trends in the research and historiographical debates about India- India-Pakistan relations by comparing the perspectives of three authors of recent books on the subject. The panel will discuss the changes that have taken place in this field in recent years; why new interdisciplinary and revisionist perspectives are necessary for its development; the reasons for the widespread public interest across the subcontinent about the state of bilateral relations; and predictions about its future. The session shall be informal and interactive\, prioritising student inputs\, and is an opportunity to engage in a wide-ranging conversation about the history and politics of the South Asian region.

SUMMARY:IR Seminar on 13th Feb
DESCRIPTION:During this session\, students will interact with Prof. Rahul Sagar\, author of a new book\, titled “To Raise a Fallen People”. Prof. Sagar will speak about the importance of an archivally grounded approach to the study of India’s IR\, what India’s experience of the nineteenth century can tell us about its present-day internationalist concerns\, and the reasons that an understanding of the processes at work within colonialism are deeply connected to any analysis of the current international order.

SUMMARY:Tricritical phenomena in the Blume-Capel model.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe Blume-Capel model is a ferromagnetic spin model that was introduced in the '60s to model an exotic phase transition in uranium oxide. Mathematically speaking\, it is an Ising model coupled to a site percolation\, combining two of the most beautiful models in statistical physics. It has a line of critical points – the Curie temperatures whereby the magnetisation-demagnetisation transition occurs. Along this critical line\, the model is expected to undergo a further phase transition at the so-called tricritical point. Despite many fascinating physics conjectures concerning the tricritical universality class\, there are few rigorous results. In this talk\, I will discuss these conjectures and touch upon recent results joint with Dmitry Krachun (Princeton University) and Christoforos Panagiotis (University of Bath) in establishing the existence of a tricritical phenomenon in all dimensions. \nAbout the Speaker:  \nHe is a mathematician working in probability theory. He is interested in the critical phenomena of percolation and spin models.  \nHe has been a postdoc at the Université de Genève advised by Hugo Duminil-Copin and Antti Knowles since Fall 2020. \nFrom 2018-2020 he did his PhD in stochastic partial differential equations\, where he was part of the group at Imperial College London. His advisers were Hendrik Weber (then University of Bath\, now at the University of Munster) and Ajay Chandra (Imperial College London). \nhttps://www.trishen.co.uk/
