SUMMARY:Cognitive Science Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link:  https://zoom.us/j/93803169827?pwd=xt5vw5Rq8QScwB7BQt9EsQ01sF6IGd.1 \nAbstract: Imagine that you are about to cross the street when you suddenly notice a vehicle approaching. This situation demands that you quickly inhibit your impending actions which requires efficient ‘inhibitory control’. Besides such daily life instances\, the importance of inhibitory control is exemplified in clinical populations who are unable to inhibit thoughts\, urges\, and actions. My research focuses on studying the cognitive and the neural mechanisms underlying inhibitory control with a hope to improve therapeutic strategies for these clinical populations. In this talk\, first\, I will show that inhibition of actions involves a rapid temporal cascade of neural activity– starting from the prefrontal cortex and ending with the cancellation of the muscle response. Second\, I will show how mind wandering\, where our focus shifts to task-unrelated thoughts\, has a detrimental impact on inhibitory control. Finally\, I will end by discussing some of our ongoing research. \nAbout the Speaker:  \nSumitash Jana \n(Assistant Professor\, Humanities and Social Sciences\, IIT\, Delhi) \nhttps://hss.iitd.ac.in/faculty/sumitash-jana \n
