SUMMARY:CS Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In many decision making settings\, we rely on advice from multiple experts to make choices about uncertain future events.  The challenge lies in learning which experts to trust\, especially when their advice may conflict or when the set of experts is infinite. In this talk\, I shall explore some recent approaches for addressing such problems. Additionally\, we shall draw  connections to online algorithms\, where decisions must be made without full knowledge of future inputs. The talk will highlight some key theoretical insights and results for classical problems like online set cover\, paging and k-server. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Amit Kumar is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi. He obtained B.Tech. degree from IIT Kanpur in 1997 and Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2002. He works in the area of combinatorial optimization\, with an emphasis on problems arising in scheduling\, graph theory and clustering. He received the IBM Faculty Award in 2005\, the INAE (Indian National Academy of Engineering) Young Engineer Award in 2006 and INSA (Indian National Science Academy) Medal for Young Scientists in 2011.  He received the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Mathematical Sciences in 2018\, and was elected Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences in 2019\, and Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2022. \n  \nCS Colloquium Opt-in Mailing List: http://eepurl.com/iY4w2A \nCS Colloquium Calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/1?cid=Y185NzM3YTk5MWFlY2FiNWY4ZGQ3ZjMyZmY4YmE3MDEwNDNhZTk2ZTI0ZDRmYzI3YzAzOTBhMmU3YTZiZGVjZDU2QGdyb3VwLmNhbGVuZGFyLmdvb2dsZS5jb20 \n

SUMMARY:Fourth Lecture in Ashoka History Monsoon Seminar 2024
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In 1956\, B. R. Ambedkar publicly converted to Buddhism raising questions about his turn from constitutionalism to religion. The answer to these questions lies in the nature of Buddhism itself. In the late colonial era\, the struggle to produce an appropriate Buddhism for a nation-in-the-making reveals a secret history foundational to modern India. Thinkers\, activists\, reformers\, pilgrims\, and monks from around South\, Southeast and East Asia discussed universalism\, nationalism\, modernity\, democracy and caste radicalism and advocated an Indian return to Buddhism and the Buddha. My talk will explore this genealogy through the Buddhist itineraries and political projects of figures like Anagarika Dharmapala\, Swami Vivekananda\, Rabindranath Tagore\, Jawaharlal Nehru\, V. D. Savarkar\, Rahul Sankrityayan and Ambedkar\, to reveal how Buddhism came to occupy a special place in a landscape of re-imagined religions\, as the very dhamma of democracy itself.  \nBio: Gitanjali Surendran has taught history at Jindal Global Law School since 2013. She has degrees from Harvard\, Oxford and JNU. She is the author of Buddhism as the Dhamma of Democracy in South Asia\, c.1890-1956 (Cambridge University Press\, July 2024).

SUMMARY:Economics Department | Weekly Seminars
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, November 6th\, 2024. \nTime: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \nVenue: AC04 -301 \nSpeaker: Anirban Kar (Professor in Economics\, Delhi School of Economics and Centre for Development Economics\, Delhi)  \nTitle: “Made In Heaven\, Matched By Parents: Can Arranged Marriage Restrict Labour Market Autonomy  And Participation Of Women?" \nAbstract: We introduce a novel household formation and bargaining model to investigate the impact of marriage norms on women’s post-marriage labour market autonomy. We find that parent-arranged marriage reduces post-marriage labour market autonomy for job-oriented women. This is surprising because restrictions on partner choice and post-marriage work belong to two completely separate spheres of patriarchal control. Moreover\, our model predicts that\, with everything else remaining the same\, a job-oriented woman may face stricter marriage restrictions than her peers. The model functions as a two-period delegation game\, where a woman and her parents play the first-period matching game\, and the woman and her husband play the second-period time allocation game. Parents’ induced matching distortion and the husband’s induced time allocation distortion interact to produce the above results. We empirically estimate the arranged marriage penalty on labour market autonomy using a nationally representative dataset from India. We measure causal effects using a marriage tradition instrument and discover that self-choice marriages have a 30 percentage point higher likelihood of labour market autonomy than arranged marriages. This effect is exceptionally prominent because only 42% of women in our sample report autonomy in labour market decisions. An estimate of the impact of parents’ arranged marriages on labour market participation shows a similar effect. Our findings have direct policy implications – to achieve women’s empowerment\, de-stigmatisation of labour market work should be complemented by cultural de-legitimization of parent-arranged marriages. \nWe look forward to having you with us. \nThanks & Regards \n– \nRegards \nDepartment of Economics \nAshoka University \nWeb: www.ashoka.edu.in \n

SUMMARY:Dept. of Political Science| POL Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Gautam Bhatia is a constitutional lawyer\, law scholar\, and science fiction writer. This seminar is based on his book\, Horizontal Rights: An Institutional Approach (Hart 2023)\, which articulates and defends a theory of horizontal rights under contemporary constitutionalism\, and applies it to modern-day problems around platform work\, unpaid domestic labour\, and so on. His latest work is the SF novel\, The Sentence\, which explores ideas around the death penalty\, ethics\, justice\, and anarchism in a science fiction setting.
