SUMMARY:Psychology Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Teaching seminar \nTitle: An introduction to serious games \nAbstract: Serious games are games designed with a purpose other than entertainment. Unlike traditional games\, they aim to inspire learning or change behavior. For example\, The Uber Game helps players understand the daily challenges faced by Uber drivers. Designing serious games requires a multi-disciplinary approach combining Psychology\, Anthropology\, and Design. Understanding psychological theories like the concept of Flow—a mental state of complete focus—helps designers create engaging game experiences. In this seminar\, we will explore the idea of serious games and see their usages in fields like healthcare and education. \nResearch seminar \nTitle: The promise of digital mental health interventions in India \nAbstract: Over 14% of Indians have a mental illness. Close to 80% of the population with a mental illness receive no treatment\, leading to a huge treatment gap. Digital mental health interventions—delivering evidence-based psychological interventions using smartphones or computers—have the potential to address the treatment gap. In this seminar\, I will discuss the digital mental health interventions I developed during my PhD and postdoc. I will also discuss my research on understanding how digital mental health interventions work and how deceptive designs in mental health apps affect users. Finally\, I will discuss my future research plans. \nAbout the Speaker: Arka graduated from IIT Roorkee in 2014 with a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering. He then got a PhD from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur\, where he worked under Dr. Nitin Gupta. During his PhD\, Arka created TreadWill – a progressive web app for helping young adults with symptoms of depression and anxiety. His work showed that a fully self-guided software can help young adults with their mental health. Currently\, he is working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Lab for Scalable Mental Health led by Dr. Jessica Schleider at Northwestern University. Broadly\, he is interested in designing brief digital mental health interventions. His long-term goal is to make evidence-based mental healthcare available to Indians for free
