SUMMARY:CS Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/97685020802?pwd=I4Hza5R2PhNgWMabcXxmbVNsQo0C5t.1 \nAbstract: For any natural number n\, a family F of subsets of a space X is said to be n-pierceable if there exists a subset A of X with n elements such that for any  F in F\, F is disjoint from A.   \nHelly’s theorem\, one of the fundamental results in discrete geometry\, states that for any finite family F of convex sets in dimension d\, if every (d+1)-tuple from F is 1-pierceable\, then the whole family F is 1-pierceable. Unfortunately\, for n > 1\, a similar statement about the n-pierceable sets is not valid for general convex sets. Danzer and Grünbaum proved the first and one of the most important Helly-type results on multi-pierceable families\, specifically for families of axis-parallel boxes.   \nOne important generalization of Helly’s theorem is the Colorful Helly theorem. In this talk\, we shall prove a colorful version of Danzer and Grünbaum’s 2-pierceability result for families of axis-parallel boxes.   \nThis work was jointly done with Sourav Chakraborty and Arijit Ghosh. \nAbout the Speaker: Soumi Nandi is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Computer Science and Automation Department at the Indian Institute of Science\, Bengaluru. She completed her PhD at the Advanced Computing and Microelectronics Unit in the Indian Statistical Institute\, Kolkata under the joint supervision of Sourav Chakraborty and Arijit Ghosh. \nHer research interest broadly includes combinatorics\, discrete geometry\, and polynomial methods. She is currently working on Geometric Transversal Theory and Converting Subsets of Hypercubes.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Cosmological observations have confirmed that only 4-5% of the total energy content in the Universe emits light and hence visible. The rest 95-96% of the energy content of the Universe is invisible and can only be detected through their gravitational interactions. This invisible Universe has tremendous potential for testing physics beyond our standard understanding of physical interactions and to reveal new physics that may play an  important role in the Universe at large cosmological scales. \nIn this talk\, I shall introduce this invisible Universe at pedagogical level and also briefly discuss the current and future efforts to unravel the mysteries of the dark Universe. \nAbout the Speaker: Prof. Anjan Ananda Sen is a leading expert in the field of Dark Energy Cosmology in India. He is currently a Professor at the Center For Theoretical Physics\, in Jamia Millia Islamia Central University\, New Delhi\, India. He has done his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Asit Banerjee and Prof. Narayn Banerjee from Jadavpur University\, Kolkata. He held postdoctoral positions at HRI Allahabad\, Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon\, Portugal and Vanderbilt University\, in U.S.A before joining Jamia Millia in the year 2007 as a Reader. He is a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences Allahabad\, and currently the secretary of Indian Association for Genral Relativity and Gravitation.  \n

SUMMARY:Gentle Reminder| Economics Department | Weekly Seminars
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, February 5th\, 2025. \nTime: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \nZoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/94862645088?pwd=6EMQTW1if8DxSKoHExdCdADBqWbZuN.1 \nSpeaker: Ivan Yotzov \nTitle: How Curvy is the Phillips Curve? \nAbstract: Macro data suggests a convex relationship between inflation and economic slack\, but identifying causality is challenging. Using micro data from large panel surveys of UK and US firms we show that the response of prices to demand shocks is also convex at the firm level. We obtain similar results using three different empirical exercises examining: the impact of COVID demand shocks\, the response to sales shocks\, and hypothetical shocks from a survey question. This convexity is strongest in firms and industries with higher inflation\, disappears in horizons beyond two years\, and is also present in response to cost shocks. We rationalize these findings in a menu cost model with positive trend inflation and decreasing returns at the firm level\, which replicates firm and aggregate Phillips curve convexity. The non-linearity emerges from trend inflation pushing firms closer to their price increase thresholds. \nHere is the link to the full paper\, in case you want to share that as well: How Curvy is the Phillips Curve? | NBER \n
