SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The United Nations has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science & Technology\, recognizing a century of Quantum Mechanics. How far have we advanced in these 100 years since the initial development of fundamental quantum physics? This colloquium will focus on some of the profound implications of quantum phenomena\, in light of recent milestones such as the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics and India's launch of the National Quantum Mission (2023-31). I will discuss the fascinating\, often counterintuitive features of quantum mechanics\, and present our work on entangled photon sources\, quantum memory protocols\, and the ongoing challenges posed by decoherence in the pursuit of practical quantum technologies. \nAbout the Speaker: Professor Rupamanjari Ghosh served as the Vice-Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University Delhi-NCR (SNU) for two terms till January 2022. She was the Founding Director of School of Natural Sciences\, and the Founding Dean\, Graduate Studies & Research at SNU. SNU became an ‘Institution of Eminence’ within few years of its existence under her transformational leadership\, and received prestigious grants and awards. \nProfessor Ghosh is a former Co-Chair\, FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) Higher Education Committee. She is a former Professor of Physics & Dean of School of Physical Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)\, New Delhi. She has a very well-recognized Ph.D. from the University of Rochester\, NY\, USA\, where she worked as a Rush Rhees Fellow\, chosen for "outstanding scholarly ability and the promise of exceptional contributions to scholarship and teaching." \nProfessor Ghosh is currently the first and only international member of the Advisory Board\, Executive Leadership Academy\, University of California\, Berkeley; Governing Council Member\, RRI\, Bangalore; Member\, Board of Governors\, Jaipuria School of Business\, and Observer & Coach\, Seth Anandram Jaipuria Group of Educational Institutions; Member\, Advisory Council\, Association of Indian Principals\, etc. She has also been extensively involved as an expert with the INR 6\,000-crore National Quantum Mission being run by the DST\, Government of India. She has served as the Chief Advisor for the NCERT Science textbooks for Classes IX and X\, developed afresh under the National Curriculum Framework-2005.  \nShe is a recipient of the Stree Shakti Science Samman for her “original contribution to Science”. She received the DAE (Department of Atomic Energy\, Government of India) CV Raman Lecture award (in Physics) in 2018-19. \nProfessor Ghosh was felicitated as Visionary EduLeader of India "for having championed a learner-centric higher educational ecosystem at Shiv Nadar University\, anchored in research & innovation\, flourishing on progressive interdisciplinarity\, driven by an outstanding faculty and supported by national & international academic partnerships" by Re:think India\, New Delhi\, in December 2017. SheWings honored her as India's Changemaker: Woman of the Year 2022 for Excellence in Education. \nBesides her contribution to science research and training from university to school level\, she is also well known for her stand and efforts to bring in gender justice\, environment consciousness and sustainability in the higher education system.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Marcin DziubiÅ„ski will be visiting Ashoka University on Wednesday and will present his recent work with Bhaskar Dutta on economics networks. We invite you to join us for the colloquium. \nAbstract: We propose and study a model of strategic network design and exploration where the hider\, subject to a budget constraint restricting the number of links\, chooses a connected network and the location of an object. Meanwhile\, the seeker\, not observing the network and the location of the object\, chooses a network exploration strategy starting at a fixed node in the network. The network exploration follows the expanding search paradigm of Alpern and Lidbetter (2013). We obtain a Nash equilibrium and characterize equilibrium payoffs in the case of linking budget allowing for trees only. We also give an upper bound on the expected number of steps needed to find the hider for the case where the linking budget allows for at most one cycle in the network. \nThis is joint work with Francis Bloch and Bhaskar Dutta \nAbout the Speaker: Marcin DziubiÅ„ski is an associate professor at the Institute of Informatics\, University of Warsaw. His research interests are at the interface of Economics and Computer Science and they include social and economic networks (particularly conflict in networks)\, mechanism design and game theory.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Colloquium: Memories as Data
DESCRIPTION:Title: Memories as Data\nWednesday\, 19 February at 1:30pm\nLocation: AC04-303 \nAbstract: Evidence\, in ordinary English\, denotes a kind of object: something you could put in a box\, or at least on a hard-drive. But recent epistemologists prefer to think of evidence as part of a thinker’s mental state\, her knowledge\, beliefs\, or the way things appear to her. I'll argue in favor of the objectual view\, by showing that in the case of memory\, the very features thought to be weaknesses of this conception are in fact strengths. Just as objects are shared between two people\, the causal relationship we have to our memory allows us to share access to the very same memory over time. By drawing a parallel with the use of legacy data in science\, I show how one kind of memory success is only explicable if we think of memories as evidential (mental) objects.

DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, February 19th\, 2025. \nTime: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \n Venue: AC04-301 \n Speaker: Prof. Francis Bloch \n Title: True colors: Authenticity in Social and Economic Interactions \nAbstract: This paper considers settings where individuals benefit from choosing the same behaviors as others but\, due to difference in identities\, backgrounds\, or tastes\, they can also suffer or incur costs to do so. The main concern is when the preferred action of the majority prevails. We find an equilibrium "tyranny of the majority" when the preferences of counterparts are not known; minority members who have low costs to do so adopt the majority-preferred action which creates additional incentives for higher cost minority member to adopt the majority action. In a game where agents can commit to an action\, however\, in one equilibrium the high cost minority agents do so and mitigate this effect. These equilibria emerge in a game where agents only care aligning actions with others\, thus indicating the basic forces behind the prevalence of certain behaviors even when agents have no concern about their reputations. \n

SUMMARY:CS Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We propose a framework for training neural networks (NNs) to imitate complex controllers (like Model Predictive Control (MPC)) for control requirements expressed using Signal Temporal Logic (STL). Initially\, the NN is trained using data from grid based sampling of an expert controller (e.g.\, Proportional Integral Derivative (PID)\, MPC). The trained NN is evaluated against the behaviour specified in STL and retrained with data from the expert controller at states where the NN controller fails. This iterative training continues until there are no failures. Moreover\, we introduce a method to evaluate the performance of the learned controller via parameterization and parameter estimation of the STL requirements. We demonstrate our approach with a non-linear flying robot system with MPC.

On the one hand\, river sand is one of the most-mined materials in the world\, while the global expansion of dams has hindered the flow of sediment to deltas. This has had an impact on the sinking of cities and deltaic environments. On the other hand\, paleoecologists and other scientists use sediments as archives to read the earth's climatic and environmental history.  But what does sediment mean to those who co-exist with this element in their everyday life? What stories do these sediments tell about these people and how do these stories shape their notions about the past\, the present and the future in the face of the uncertainty of climate change? In the La Mojana inland delta in northern Colombia\, everyday life transpires as river sediment—animated by floods—moves\, crumbles\, and accumulates. Thousands of dollars have been invested in climate change adaptation projects to reconfigure people's relationship with floodwaters and sediment. They do this through river and wetland rehabilitation projects that require large-scale sediment removal. However\, the objectives of these projects have not been met because laboratory tests have shown that the sediments in this region have high concentrations of heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. These toxic materials come from gold mines and from a past intensive use of arsenical pesticides for commercial agriculture thus configuring a toxic landscape of environmental injustice. In this presentation I ask how river sediments become archives of the earth to tell everyday stories of injustice and disruption in an uncertain world. \nBio of Speaker: Alejandro Camargo is an assistant professor at the Department of History and Social Sciences at Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla\, Colombia. He holds a Ph.D. in geography from Syracuse University and\, prior to his current position\, was a postdoctoral researcher at the department of geography at Université de Montréal. He’s broadly interested in how politics mediates people-nature relationships in fluvial environments. He has conducted research about conflicts over property rights in wetland areas\, the environmental history of agrarian development in floodplains\, the politics of climate change adaptation in flood-prone landscapes\, and the social life of fluvial sediment. His research has been geographically focused on the Colombian Caribbean region and is informed by discussions in political ecology\, development and disaster studies\, agrarian political economy\, and environmental anthropology.   \n  \nWe look forward to your active participation. \nWarm regards\, \nEnvironmental Studies Department
