DESCRIPTION:Roll and Stumble: A minimal model of self-organization of driven granular media with bimodal mobility and of the phenomenon of metastasis and tumour-formation* \nAbstract: Bacteria engage in efficient chemotaxis utilizing its two distinct modes of mobility – run and tumble (R&T). Tumbling updates the location of food and running allows access to food in time before the source of food drifts away. Here we study particles such as donuts and spheres that possess bimodal mobility of rolling and sliding through stumbling {R&S} when driven externally. They produce efficient and nearly perfect crystallization in 2- dimensions within a range of mobility where the stumblers nucleate for long enough in time and of large enough a size so that the rollers can collide and stumble to form single crystals. It occurs only within a window of velocity of rollers that is small enough for the aggregation into a single crystal to occur but is not large enough for destroying the nuclei by a large impact. The implication of this inherent optimality of tuning between two forms of mobility is likely a key to\, for instance\, the formation and growth of tumours in systems and enhancing\, as well as arresting\, metastasis. We also discuss this phenomenon’s relation to a general mobility-induced-phase-separation in active matter\, through a general principle of auto-tuning of friction. *Work done by Deepak Kumar\, Anit Sane\, Shankar Ghosh & SB \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Prof. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya is a physicist and former Director of the TCG-CREST (Centres for Research and Education in Science and Technology) in Kolkata and the CV Raman Professor at Ashoka University\, Haryana. He is also a former Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research\, Mumbai and a former Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Distinguished Professor at Presidency University\, Kolkata.  \nEducated at Presidency College\, Kolkata and University in Delhi\, he earned his PhD in physics at Northwestern University in the US. After post-doctoral stints at the Magnet Laboratory at MIT and at the University of Chicago\, he spent two decades at Corporate Research Laboratories in the US.  He has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has held various distinguished positions including Visiting Fellow Commoner\, Trinity College\, Cambridge University and distinguished professor at TIFR. \nApart from physics\, he is interested in higher education policy in India related specifically to science and technology research.

Using the expansion of fiber-optic networks and firm-to-firm transaction data\, we find that better connectivity shifts input sourcing to well-connected regions and diversifies supplier networks. We estimate a spatial equilibrium model with endogenous network formation and rational inattention and find that high-speed internet reduced information acquisition and communication costs. Enhanced connectivity increased real income by 2.2% in the median province. Our findings underscore the importance of digital infrastructure investments in fostering economic growth by improving supply chain efficiency and broadening firms’ access to suppliers.

DESCRIPTION:Centre for Studies in Gender and Sexuality would like to invite you to a panel discussion on 'Desire in Sufi and Urdu Poetry' at the White Box (pre-event area outside Black Box)\, AC-04\, 4th Floor\, 5.30 pm onwards. The discussion will take place with Wafa Hamid and Amit Julka\, moderated by Madhavi Menon.  \nImmersing into the rich tradition of Sufi and Urdu poetry and intertwining the sacred and the profane\, the panel will explore ambiguities of desire present in the tradition\, and discuss its implications in today's socio-political context. How does one read this ambiguity\, and can it be interpreted as queerness? Has there been a heterosexualization of the Urdu ghazal since British rule in South Asia? What do we learn about the politics of desire from poets like Bulleh Shah\, Agha Shahid Ali\, Mir\, and Ifti Nasim\, and how do we make sense of it in the current state of the world? These are some of the questions the panel we look forward to answering.  \nAbout the speakers: \nAmit Julka is Assistant Professor of International Relations at Ashoka University\, and a coordinator of the Making Identity Count Project . Other than his prolific work at the intersection of International Relations\, popular culture\, and South Asian politics\, Julka's has worked expansively in the realms of cultural and political landscapes of Urdu\, and has a great love for Urdu poetry. \nWafa Hamid is Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Lady Shri Ram College for Women\, University of Delhi. Her main areas of interest include: Gender and Sexuality Studies\, Literary Theory\, Popular Culture\, Women’s Writing\, Culture Studies\,  South Asian Studies and Translation Studies among others. She has done an extensive study of the Kashmiri-American poet\, Agha Shahid Ali with a focus on the politics and poetics of Kashmir. \nMadhavi Menon (moderator) is a Professor of English at Ashoka University\, and the Director of Centre for Studies in Gender and Sexuality. Her latest book is titled The Law of Desire (Speaking Tiger\, 2021). She is also the author of Infinite Variety: A History of Desire in India (Speaking Tiger\, 2018)\, and several books on queer theory\, as well as editor of Shakesqueer: A Queer Companion to the Complete Works of Shakespeare (Duke University Press\, 2011).
