SUMMARY:CS Colloquium: AI for Good: An Indian perspective
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: ‘AI for Good’ is a catchall term that has largely come to mean mitigation of some of the negative aspects of AI systems that operate at scale: bias\, lack of privacy\, lack of explanations. What is often ignored is the capability of AI models to create positive impact in meaningful ways. Specifically in India\, where severe resource constraints are juxtaposed with massive data generated by a large and tremendously diverse population\, the potential for social good that is driven by AI-generated insights is very high and largely untapped for various reasons. In this talk\, I describe our efforts to make a dent in this area\, with specific examples of our work in public health and primary education. I hope to convince the audience of the rich potential of AI for Good in these contexts\, and to convey how India can stand as an exemplar for AI applications in the development sector across the Global South. \n  \nAbout the Speaker:  Alpan Raval is the Chief Scientist\, AI/ML at the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He has previously led applied AI teams at LinkedIn and Amazon and worked as a Member of the Technical Staff at D E Shaw Research. Earlier in his career\, he was a tenured faculty member at the Claremont Colleges in California\, USA\, where he taught mathematics and computational biology. With over 24 years of experience in applied AI\, Alpan has worked in multiple AI application domains\, including healthcare\, agriculture\, social networks\, computational advertising\, and drug discovery.

SUMMARY:HAPPENING TODAY: Economics Department | Weekly Seminars
DESCRIPTION: Dear All\, \n The Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, March 5th\, 2025. \n Time: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \n Venue: AC04-301 \nSpeaker: Prof. Gaurav Jakhu \nTitle: Integrating a Free Online Service:  Advertisements and Competitive Implications \nAbstract: This paper examines firms' incentives to integrate free\, advertising-financed online services with hardware products and their implications. Our analysis shows that service integration has  a non-monotonic effect on hardware prices while reducing advertising levels. Moreover\, when the quality advantage is sufficiently large\, integration increases both firms' profits by enabling them to monetize different user segments. However\, for small to intermediate quality advantage\, service integration can make the dominant firm better off and rival firm  worse when the nuisance cost of advertisement is intermediate\, and both firms better off when the nuisance cost of advertisement  is sufficiently high. Finally\, service integration can benefit users but harm advertisers. \nThanks & Regards\, \nSapna Sharma

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Over the past half-century\, observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have offered profound insights into the physics of the early universe. More recently\, the detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from merging compact binaries by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory has opened an entirely new observational window into the cosmos. In this talk\, designed for undergraduate students\, I will discuss how decades of CMB studies\, along with the recent detection of a stochastic background of GWs by the pulsar timing arrays\, provide crucial clues about the fundamental physics shaping the primordial universe.\n  \nAbout the Speaker: L. Sriramkumar is a Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras\, Chennai. He earned his Ph.D. in 1997 from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics\, Pune\, under the supervision of Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan. He then pursued postdoctoral research with Prof. Jacob Bekenstein at the Racah Institute of Physics\, Hebrew University\, Jerusalem (1997-1999)\, and Prof. Don Page at the Department of Physics\, University of Alberta\, Edmonton (1999-2001). In 2001\, he joined the Harish-Chandra Research Institute\, Prayagraj\, first as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a faculty member in 2003. He moved to IIT Madras in 2011\, where he continues to work on various aspects of gravitation and cosmology\, with a particular focus on the physics of the early universe. \nWe look forward to your active participation.
