SUMMARY:CS Colloquium: An Amazing Structure for Representing All Steiner Mincuts of a Graph
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Mincuts are one of the most well-researched topics in algorithms. In recent years\, there has been phenomenal research on algorithms for computing (s\, t)-mincuts and global mincuts. On the other hand\, the data structural and graph theoretical aspects of mincuts have also been well-researched in the last 50 years\, though they are not as widely known despite being very fundamental and seminal.\nWe shall begin with a light discussion of the following 2 classical results. (1) There is a directed acyclic graph that stores all (s\,t)-mincuts of a graph. (2) There is a tree-like graph that stores all global mincuts of a graph. We shall then discuss a structure that stores Steiner mincuts – generalization of (s\,t)-mincuts and global mincuts. This structure\, designed by Dinitz and Vainshtein is amazingly elegant and beautiful. We shall discuss this structure along with new and much simpler proofs of its properties. \nNote: Any one with basic knowledge of algorithms and elementary graph theory should be able to follow most of the seminar. \n\nAbout the Speaker: Surender Baswana is the Tapas Misra Memorial Chair Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He did BTech\, MTech\, and PhD from IIT Delhi\, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science. He has been a faculty member at IIT Delhi since 2006. His research area is the design and analysis of algorithms. \nWe look forward to your active participation.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Ashokan\, \nThe DEPARTMENT OF VISUAL ARTS cordially invites you to a colloquium in the VISUAL ARTS COLLOQUIUM SERIES '24-25   \nTitle: Questions of “Nature” \nSpeaker: Ravi Agarwal\, Artist & Environmentalist \nAbstract: Delving into his experience and research based practice as an environmentalist and artist\, Agarwal speaks about the his ideas of nature\, its speculative futures\, through enquires based in the sciences\, issues of social justice and aesthetics. \nBio: Ravi Agarwal (www.raviagarwal.com) is an interdisciplinary artist\, photographer\, environmental campaigner\, writer\, and curator whose work bridges art and activism. His practice addresses the complex relationship between nature and its futures through photography\, video\, text\, and installation. Ravi's work has been exhibited at major biennales including Lahore (2024)\, Havana (2019)\, Yinchuan (2018)\, Kochi (2016)\, Sharjah (2013)\, and Documenta XI (2002). He has curated large public art projects like Yamuna-Elbe (2009) and Embrace Our Rivers\, (2018) and served as photography curator for the Serendipity Arts Festival (2018\, 2019). He curated New Natures\, A terrible beauty is born at the Goethe Institute and CSMVS Museum\, Mumbai (January 2022)\, and Imagined Documents at the Les Recontres d' Arles (July 2022). He was the curatorial advisor for the exhibition Carbon (2024) at the Science Gallery\, Bengaluru\, and is Co-Convenor for the upcoming Bergan Assembly 2025 (Norway). Ravi is also the founder of the environmental NGO Toxics Link (www.toxicslink.org) and The Shyama Foundation\, (www.sharedecologies.org) which supports initiatives at the intersection of art and ecology in India. He recent projects include Samtal Jameen\, Samtal Jameer(www.multispeciesart.org) and a photobook The Power Plant – fragments in time. SUMMARY:Psychology Colloquium: Towards a Psychology of Forced Migration and Refugeehood
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The successful management of refugee immigration\, including refugee integration in host societies\, requires a sound understanding of underlying psychological processes. A model of the Psychological Antecedents of Refugee Integration (PARI) is proposed\, highlighting perceived forcedness (i.e.\, coercion and loss of control from “push” factors) and ensuing perils (risks and potential suffering during migration) as distinctive factors of refugee (vs. voluntary) migration. According to our model\, perceptions and subjective representations of forcedness and associated perils activate specific psychological processes relevant to refugee integration and thus moderate responses to the demands and stressor of the immigration situation. We conceptualize these distinctive influences for integration-relevant processes in both refugees and in residents. By pinpointing the unique features of refugee migration\, PARI generates novel and  specific  hypotheses  about  psychological  processes predicting refugee integration. For instance\, refugees’ memories of forcedness and associated perils should lead to high preoccupation with the restoration of basic needs after arrival in a receiving country\, which interferes with integration-related activities. Conversely\, residents’ perceptions of forcedness and related perils may enhance empathy with refugees\, but may also magnify feelings of anxiety and threat. Social and political implications will be discussed. \nAbout the Speaker: Gerald Echterhoff is Professor of Social Psychology at University of Münster\, Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science\, and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of North Rhine-Westphalia. His research passions span basic social cognition\, complemented by social neuroscience\, shared reality\, motivation in social and political contexts\, affective responses\, interpersonal and intergroup processes\, and issues critical to societal cohesion (forced migration\, refugee integration\, collective representations\, radicalization). The range of these  endeavors is rooted in my fascination for the pursuit and advancement of knowledge about how humans think\, feel and respond to the world\, especially in the company of others.  \nWe look forward to your active participation. \n
