SUMMARY:CS Seminar: Yao\'s Garbled Circuit
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Garbled circuits are a foundational cryptographic primitive that enable secure evaluation of Boolean circuits. Informally\, a garbled circuit is an encrypted representation of a circuit\, constructed in such a way that\, given specific keys encoding an input\, one can compute the corresponding output keys—without learning anything about the underlying inputs or intermediate computations. This property makes garbled circuits a powerful tool for secure computation. Originally introduced by Andrew Yao in 1986\, they continue to serve as a central technique in the design of secure multi-party protocols. In this class\, I will provide an introduction to secure computation and walk through the complete construction of Yao's garbled circuits from first principles. The only prerequisite is familiarity with basic computer science concepts\, particularly Boolean circuits. \nAbout the Speaker: Varun Narayanan is a postdoctoral researcher in the Computer Science department at UCLA\, hosted by Prof. Rafail Ostrovsky. He previously held a postdoctoral position at Technion\, working with Prof. Yuval Ishai and Prof. Eyal Kushilevitz. He earned his PhD from TIFR\, Mumbai\, advised by Dr. Vinod Prabhakaran. Varun’s research focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of cryptography\, with an emphasis on secure multiparty computation. \nWe look forward to your active participation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In the standard Lamda CDM model galaxies are formed in collapsed dark matter halos.  These dark matter halos are produced from the initial density and velocity perturbations that evolve through gravitational attraction. New JWST observations put stringent constraints on number of galaxies per unit volume\, mass of stars in galaxies and number density of super-massive blackholes etc. In this talk the speaker will present the widely accepted scenario of galaxy formation\, its present status and how these models perform against the JWST observations. The speaker will also present the ongoing efforts in India to address this problem. \nAbout the Speaker: Prof. Raghunathan Srianand is the director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune. He is a renowned Indian cosmologist and astrophysicist\, known for his groundbreaking studies on redshift evolution and the cosmic microwave background radiation. Prof. Srianand is a member of the International Astronomical Union and a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology in 2008 by CSIR. \nProf. Srianand is involved in various observational and theoretical projects: 1) probing the physical conditions in the high-z proto-galaxies traced by DLAs\, 2) probing the time and space variation of fundamental constants using very high resolution spectra of QSOs\, 3) tracing the redshift evolution of the CMB temperature using fine-structure lines and 4) semi-analytic modelling of formation and evolution of IGM\, reionization and redshift evolution of global star formation rate density in the universe. \nWe look forward to your active participation.

SUMMARY:HAPPENING TODAY | Economics Department | Weekly Seminars
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Economics invites you to their weekly seminar on Wednesday\, April 23rd\, 2025. \nTime: 1:40 PM to 2:50 PM \n Venue: AC 04 301 \n Speaker: Prof. Aditi Singh \n Title: Unequal Transmission: Monetary Policy and Household Consumption in India \nJoint with Vivek Gupta (Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence) and Fiorella Pizzolon (Hamilton College) \nAbstract: This paper studies the real effects of monetary policy in India. Using household-level data\, we find that monetary policy shocks significantly impact household consumption. These effects are heterogeneous across households\, depending on their wealth holdings. Motivated by the importance of the marginal propensity to consume (MPC) in models evaluating monetary policy transmission\, we calculate MPCs separately for different household groups. Specifically\, we classify households into three categories — poor hand-to-mouth\, wealthy hand-to-mouth\, and non hand-to-mouth — and estimate the MPC for each group. We document substantial heterogeneity in these responses\, suggesting that monetary policy transmits very differently across the wealth distribution. \n  \nThanks & Regards\, \nSapna Sharma \n
