SUMMARY:Are You a Man or a Mouse? Masculinity Studies in the 20th and 21st Centuries
DESCRIPTION:“Are you a Man or a Mouse?” offers a critical survey of where Masculinity Studies are after roughly forty years since their inception. It examines the concept of masculinity itself\, and interrogates the almost mythological notion of masculinity in perpetual crisis. Drawing on psychoanalytical as well as on deconstructive\, narratological\, intersectional and comparative approaches\, the presentation discusses how these frameworks contribute to a better understanding of masculinity\, i.e. what ‘they allow us to conceive’ but also what ‘they hinder us from conceiving.’ \nStefan Horlacher is the Chair of English Literature at Dresden University of Technology\, Germany. He held guest professorships in India\, Sri Lanka\, Poland\, Italy\, Malta and the US. His publications comprise his prize-winning Conceptions of Masculinity in the Works of Thomas Hardy and D.H. Lawrence (2006\, in German)\, Taboo and Transgression in British Literature (2010)\, Configuring Masculinity in Theory and Literary Practice (2015)\, Transgender and Intersex: Theoretical\, Practical\, and Artistic Perspectives (2016; revised and expanded edition 2026)\, Masculinities: An International Handbook (2016\, in German)\, Contemporary Masculinities in the UK and the US (2017)\, GenderGraduateProjects V – Women’s Movements\, Queerness/Intersex\, Feminist Pornography (2021\, in German) and Contemporary Sri Lankan Literature and Art: The Creation of a New Community in the Aftermath of War (2026).

SUMMARY:Imagined Ecological Histories threaten India’s most widespread Biome
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Environmental Studies cordially invites you to the First colloquium in the Spring '26 Colloquium Series on Friday\, 6 February 2026 \nTitle: "Imagined Ecological Histories threaten India’s most widespread Biome" \nSpeaker: Dr. Ashish Nerlekar\, Ramanujan fellow\, IISER Pune \nTime: 6:30 – 7:30 PM  \nZoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/96122435289?pwd=AQe00rb1vK4uaooehLJhNdKJprXO4h.1  \nAbstract: Inaccurate ecological histories lead to ecosystem mismanagement–eventually exaggerating the global biodiversity crisis. Tropical savannas and grasslands are an ideal example to illustrate this problem\, where romanticized ideas of a forested past are pervasive among policymakers and conservation biologists\, and are causing massive biodiversity losses. In my talk\, I will first focus on the much-debated origins of Indian savannas and provide several lines of evidence–ranging from nature descriptions in traditional literature to archival records and fossil plants and animals–that attest the antiquity of India's most widespread biome. Drawing from my past and ongoing field-based research in the savannas of Maharashtra\, I will finally focus on the consequences of this misinterpretation for plant and bird communities\, and make a case for why accurate ecological histories matter for halting the global biodiversity crisis. \nSpeaker's Bio: Dr. Ashish Nerlekar is a Ramanujan fellow at IISER Pune and studies the ecology of tropical savannas. \nLooking forward to your active participation in the talk. \n  \nWarm regards\, \nEnvironmental Studies Department
