SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Rolling the Dice: Monte Carlo Simulations of Pulsars and FRBs
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Monte Carlo simulations represent an attractive means to model complex systems and are\, of course\, widely used in physics and astronomy. Much of my career has been spent working with students and collaborators on using Monte Carlo techniques to model the observational biases and underlying physics of Galactic neutron stars and\, latterly\, cosmological fast radio bursts (FRBs). In this talk\, I describe four recent projects that I have carried out with students in this arena which aim to investigate: (i) the repeating population of FRBs; (ii) whether all FRBs repeat; (iii) the connection between pulsars and unidentified Fermi gamma-ray sources; (iv) the contribution of millisecond pulsars to diffuse gamma-ray emission from Galactic globular clusters. I conclude with a look ahead to possible projects in the future. \nAbout the Speaker: Duncan Lorimer currently holds the rank of Professor of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University (WVU).  After graduating with a BSc in Astrophysics from the University of Wales in Cardiff in 1990\, where he was mentored by Prof. Bernard Schutz\, Lorimer got his PhD in 1994 for his contributions to Pulsar Astronomy from the University of Manchester in the UK working under the supervision of Profs. Andrew Lyne\, Dick Manchester and Matthew Bailes. Since then he has held positions at the University of Manchester (Lecturer; 1994-5); the Max-Planck-Institute for Radio Astronomy (Postdoctoral Fellow; 1995-8); Cornell University (Postdoctoral Fellow; 1998-2001); University of Manchester (Royal Society Research Fellow; 2001-6) and at WVU (Faculty; 2006-present).  \nWhile at WVU\, Lorimer has received a Cottrell Scholar Award (2008) from the Research Corporation for Scientific Advancement and has received both College and University awards for excellence in teaching (2009\, 2010) and for research as a Benedum Scholar (2019). From 2019 to 2024\, he served the WVU Eberly College of Arts and Sciences as Associate Dean for Research. Lorimer has been a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society since 1994 and in 2018 was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in recognition of his contributions to our understanding of pulsars\, and for the discovery of fast radio bursts. In 2023\, he was the co-recipient of the Shaw Prize in Astronomy along with Maura McLaughlin and Matthew Bailes for the discovery of fast radio bursts. Lorimer was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2024. Since 2025\, Lorimer has been recognized as an Eberly Distinguished Chair for Academic Excellence. \n(https://physics.wvu.edu/directory/faculty/duncan-lorimer) \nWe look forward to your active participation.

SUMMARY:Computer Science Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/92318501118?pwd=Msjgq8aTadSNH8PIisiaWFhF4vtBWa.1 \nAbstract: Upgradation of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) software is quite common to accommodate evolving industrial requirements. Verifying the correctness of such upgrades remains a significant challenge. In this talk\, we propose a verification-based approach to ensure the correctness of the existing functionality in the upgraded version of a PLC software. The method converts the older and the newer versions of the sequential function chart (SFC) into two Petri net models. We then verify whether one model is contained within another\, based on a novel containment checking algorithm grounded in symbolic path equivalence. Experimental evaluation on 80 real-world benchmarks from the OSCAT library highlights the effectiveness of the framework. We have compared our approach with verifAPS\, a popular tool used for software upgradation\, and observed nearly 4x performance improvement. \nAbout the Speaker: Soumyadip Bandyopadhyay is a Scientist at ABB Corporate Research\, working on formal verification of PLC software\, validation of Generative AI outputs\, and LLM-driven forward engineering. He holds a Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur in Formal Methods and Software Engineering\, and was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Hasso Plattner Institute\, Germany. He previously served as an Assistant Professor at BITS Pilani\, Goa\, and later worked as a Senior Formal Verification Engineer at NVIDIA\, focusing on datapath verification. \nWe look forward to your active participation.
