SUMMARY:Psychology and Cognitive Sciences Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Spatial hearing is a fundamental cognitive ability that allows us to seamlessly interact with our environment and machines. Whether dodging an unseen approaching car or reaching for a ringing phone\, perceiving the exact distance of a sound source is critical. However\, while the brain's ability to locate sounds horizontally and vertically is well documented\, the neural and computational mechanisms underlying auditory distance perception remain poorly understood. This gap exists because distance processing is highly complex: it is difficult to isolate distance from mere loudness\, the brain must rely on multiple subtle spatial cues\, and these cues are combined in a highly context dependent manner. This talk bridges cognitive neuroscience and computational modeling to decode these complex mechanisms. I will present a series of behavioral and brain-imaging experiments conducted in virtual environments. By applying advanced computational tools and multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to neuroimaging data\, we can begin to map how normal-hearing listeners process sensory cues and identify the specific cortical structures that govern distance perception.  Ultimately\, understanding the fundamental architecture of biological spatial hearing provides a powerful blueprint for artificial systems. The talk will conclude by discussing how these neural insights directly translate into real-world applications\, including the development of next-generation hearing prosthetics\, more immersive virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR)\, and biologically plausible navigation for intelligent robotics.  Keywords: Spatial Hearing; Neuro AI; Cognitive Robotics; Cognitive Neuroscience; Computational Modeling; Auditory Perception; Neuroimaging (fMRI/MVPA); Virtual Reality. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Keerthi Doreswamy is an interdisciplinary researcher dedicated to bridging the gap between human cognition and artificial systems. He began his career as a software engineer; however\, a drive to understand the fundamental architecture of intelligence led him to pursue a Master’s in Computational Neuroscience and Cognitive Robotics at the University of Birmingham. He subsequently completed an interdisciplinary PhD jointly supervised at the University of Pavol Jozef Safarik and MGBH\, Harvard Medical School.  Operating at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience\, artificial intelligence\, and psychology\, his primary focus is understanding how sensory perception works across both biological and artificial systems. Through his research\, Dr. Doreswamy not only answers fundamental questions about human perception but also aims to drive innovation in machine intelligence. His research findings may directly translate to realworld applications\, paving the way for advancements in hearing prosthetics\, digital therapeutics for mental health\, next-generation VR\, cognitive rehabilitation\, and intelligent robotics.  \n
