SUMMARY:Being as One: Living as Making\, Making as Living
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nThe Department of Visual Arts is delighted to invite you to the second talk in the Visual Arts Colloquium Series\, Monsoon 2026. \nTitle of the Talk: Being as One: Living as Making\, Making as Living \nSpeaker: Manisha Parekh \nDate & Time: Friday\, 18th September\, 2026\, 1:30 PM – 3 PM  \nVenue: Visual Arts Studio (near sports block)z \nAbstract:  \nChoosing a material is a journey I only understand once I'm in the thick of it. Each material carries its own character\, its own quiet resistance\, and it's only through spending real time with it that it begins to reveal itself. Once the work starts\, I've come to recognize a kind of give and take — a point where I stop simply acting on the material and start listening to it. It begins to guide me\, to show me how it wants to be used\, and I've learned to let that happen rather than resist it. I don't look for resolution too soon. I let the process stay open\, unfinished\, still becoming. Over the years\, I've moved between painting\, collage\, drawing\, and sculpture without feeling the need to stay within any one of them — and it's in that movement\, that exploration\, that the geometric and the organic seem to find each other. \nSpeaker Bio: \nManisha Parekh is one of the few artists in India today who continues to explore an exclusively abstract visual language. Her distinct aesthetic subtly echoes the geometric draftsmanship of Nasreen Mohamedi\, her teacher at Baroda\, while also carrying traces of  V. S. Gaitonde's ethereal abstraction and the gestural energy of Jeram Patel's ink drawings.\nHer practice\, often a celebration of the art and craft traditions of her native land\, moves fluidly between painting\, collage\, drawing and sculptural installation\, weaving together the geometric and the organic. Material is Parekh's metaphor.\nShe has exhibited internationally in Lahore (Pakistan)\, Singapore\, the USA\, London and Amsterdam\, among other locations. Her shows in India include Chromatic Flight at Nature Morte\, New Delhi (2023)\, and A River Inside at Jhaveri Contemporary\, Mumbai (2020).\nParekh completed her BA and MA in Painting from M.S. University\, Baroda (1988 and 1990)\, and a further degree at the Royal College of Art\, London (1993). She lives and works in New Delhi. \n  \nTo receive further updates\, talk-specific announcements and event details\, please sign up for the Visual Arts Colloquium mailing list: [Sign up here] \nWe look forward to having you with us for the talk.  \nwarm regards\, \nVisual Arts Department

SUMMARY:Vishwakarma Awards 2026 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Applications Open for Vishwakarma Awards 2026 – Deadline Extended to September 20 \nAshoka University is anchoring a theme track at this year's Vishwakarma Awards\, India's National Hardware Innovation Challenge for STEM and Design Students\, instituted by the Maker Bhavan Foundation in partnership with IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad. Now in its 5th edition\, this year's challenge is shaping up to be the largest yet\, and the application deadline has been extended to September 20\, 2026 (11:59 PM)\, giving interested students more time to apply. \nTeams of 2 to 5 students\, across Bachelor's\, Master's\, and PhD programmes\, are invited to apply. Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged. Selected teams will spend the next several months building a working\, demonstrable hardware prototype addressing one of nine themes spanning health tech\, sustainability\, AI in manufacturing\, and more. Ashoka is proudly anchoring three of these themes: Physical AI for Resilience & Inclusion\, Frontier Diagnostics: The Next Vital Signs\, and HCI 2.0: Designing Interaction Beyond Chat. Teams are free to apply to any of the nine themes\, including the six anchored by IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad. \nAn added incentive for Ashoka applicants: winners across the various themes will get a direct shortlisting into the next round of TechSparks\, organised by the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Ashoka Innovation Hub – giving Vishwakarma winners a head start into Ashoka's own innovation and entrepreneurship pipeline. \nNo prototype is required at the application stage – only an idea. The application is free of cost\, and students may submit multiple ideas\, across multiple themes\, and be part of multiple\nteams. \nWinning teams in each theme will receive cash prizes of ₹2\,00\,000 for first place\, ₹1\,00\,000 for second place\, and ₹50\,000 for third place\, along with a ₹30\,000 prototyping grant awarded to every finalist team. \nFor any questions or help forming a team\, students may reach out to the Makerspace team at makerspace@ashoka.edu.in \nApply Now: www.vishwakarma-awards.org

SUMMARY:Psychology and Cognitive Sciences Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Behavioural ecologists studying mate choice in birds and fish used to feel comfortable to make the simplifying assumption that each choice could be analysed independently of all others. We now know that many species of birds\, fish\, and mammals—notably humans—are affected by each others’ choices. When Mary chooses Mehmet\, Ayshe notices\, and this knowledge of Mary’s choice boosts her assessment of Mehmet. For the scientist trying to break the code of beauty\, this is bad news; it adds an order of complexity to an already difficult problem. But for those of us interested in understanding the evolution of cognition\, it is an opportunity. It is a manner of social learning that applies within a very specific context of uncommonly transparent relevance to evolution. I will discuss some of our research that has gone into understanding this kind of learning\, and what it says about humans\, their social learning\, and how they choose their wives\, husbands\, boyfriends and girlfriends. \nAbout the Speaker: Robert Bowers hails originally from rural Canada. He earned his BA in psychology at BoÄŸaziçi University in Istanbul\, and stayed to join their new cognitive science MA programme. While at BoÄŸaziçi\, he became interested in the work of William Timberlake\, so moved to Indiana University for his doctoral studies in cognitive science and animal behaviour. After postdoctoral stints in Indiana University and Universidade do Minho\, he joined the faculty at Bilkent University\, Department of Psychology and Department of Neuroscience. Robert approaches the behaviour and cognition of living beings from a systems orientation\, and an evolutionary orientation. This research has involved a range of methods\, empirical and synthetic\, with several animal species (quail\, dogs\, humans\, pigeons\, rats)\, in several laboratory contexts\, including conditioning paradigms\, cognitive modelling\, and simulation of evolutionary processes. Robert’s work with humans has a cognitive psychology heart and a behavioural biology soul. One area of focus has been on cognition in the context of mate choice\, with attention to what can be known about the structure of mate choice as a search problem. In the background is an interest in the history of science\, with focus on the interface of biology and psychology\, and efforts to integrate these complementary sciences\, especially among systems approaches.
