SUMMARY:Simulating Stress Laws under Extremal Dependence: Characterizing What An Input Model Must Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium Announcement \nSimulating the Unseen: Learning the Structure of Extreme Financial Stress\n\n\n \n\nAnand Deo\nIndian Institute of Management Bangalore \n\n\n\nAbstract\nSevere financial stress can result from combinations of shocks too rare to appear in historical data. Simulating such events raises a fundamental question: what must a model learn about how risks become extreme together? In this talk\, we study this question for financial systems driven by multivariate heavy-tailed risk factors. We pursue two goals: generating representative scenarios conditional on several losses being large\, and identifying the most plausible configurations that cause those losses. We show that both goals share the same limiting description of extremes but require different guarantees: preserving the probabilities of regions of extreme shocks\, and preserving the densities used to rank individual scenarios. We then introduce SSGEN (Self-Similar Generative Estimation)\, which learns the relative sizes and directions of shocks from moderately extreme observations and uses Pareto scaling to extrapolate to more extreme levels. We establish conditions under which SSGEN achieves both goals and derive convergence rates\, even when the target stress event is absent from the data. Finally\, we show how these guarantees carry over to decisions based on stress distributions or likelihood-defined stress regions. Numerical experiments on simulated and real data demonstrate that our asymptotic theory is fairly robust to the choice of model hyper-parameters. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker\nAnand Deo is an Assistant Professor in the Decision Sciences Area at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Interface induced phenomenon in ferromagnetic/organic semiconductor is an emerging topic towards organic spintronics [1\,2]. Buckminsterfullerene (C60) is a potential candidate for organic spintronics due to many desirable properties viz. low spin orbit coupling\, large spin diffusion length at room temperature etc. It has been observed that C60 exhibits ferromagnetism at the interface of FM/C60 [3-5]. We have prepared single layers of Fe\, Co and CoFeB\, and compared the magnetic properties to the bilayers of Fe/C60\, Co/C60 and CoFeB/C60. The films were prepared on both MgO (001) and Si (100) substrates. Finite magnetic moment was obtained in the C60 layer at the interface between the Fe/C60 and Co/C60 layers by polarized neutron reflectivity measurements [3-5]. Magneto optic Kerr effect (MOKE) based microscopy was performed to observe the effect of the magnetic C60 layer on the hysteresis loop shape and the domain images of the FM (Fe\, Co\, CoFeB\, NiFe) layers [3-8]. We also study the change in magnetic anisotropy due to the presence of spinterface in these bilayer systems [4-8]. It has been found that anisotropy increases with C60 thickness. We have also studied the FM/OSC having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). In this context we have taken Pt/Co/C60 as a model system. It has been observed that introducing a C60 layer increases the anisotropy and decreases the domain size of the system [7]. Further we also show that ferromagnetism can be observed at the interface between Cu/C60 interface. In this case due to the charge transfer from Cu to C60\, density of states of Cu gets modified which leads to ferromagnetism in Cu [9]. I will also discuss how DMI can emerge at the spinterface between Co/C60 interface [10]. At the end I will discuss the role of interface in enhancing the spin pumping in a CFB/β-W/C60\, CFB/Alq3\, NiFe/Graphene systems [11-15]. \nAbout the Speaker: Prof. Subhankar Bedanta is a Professor in the School of Physical Sciences and the Chief Coordinator of the Center for Interdisciplinary Sciences (CIS) at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER)\, Odisha. He also leads the Laboratory for Nanomagnetism and Magnetic Materials (LNMM).  \nHe received his Ph.D. from the University of Duisburg-Essen\, Germany\, in 2006\, and subsequently held postdoctoral positions at the University of Duisburg-Essen and Princeton University\, USA\, as well as a guest scientist position at Forschungszentrum Jülich\, Germany. \nHis research focuses broadly on nanomagnetism and spintronics\, including magnetic domain and domain-wall dynamics\, superferromagnetism\, magnetic antidot lattices\, antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic spintronics\, topological insulators\, skyrmionics\, flexible and organic spintronics\, spin pumping\, and magnon–magnon coupling. He has authored 100+ research publications and has received several recognitions\, including the Young Scientist Award of the Odisha Physical Society (2014) and the Young Achiever Award at the DAE Solid State Physics Symposium (2019). He has also served as an editor and editorial board member for several international journals in magnetism\, spintronics\, and nanotechnology. \nWe look forward to your active participation.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Colloquium: Alex Watson - Can we perceive our selves? Kumārila on I-cognition.
DESCRIPTION:The Ashoka University Department of Philosophy invites everyone to its second colloquium of the Monsoon 2026 semester \nSpeaker: Alex Watson (Ashoka University) \nTitle of talk: Can we perceive our selves? Kumārila on I-cognition \nVenue: Online\, at this link. \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, 30 September 2026\, 13:30-15:00. \nAbstract: Part I will consist of a close reading and philosophical evaluation of the first extended and sophisticated argument in Indian philosophy for the thesis that each of us can perceive our own self – that of the MÄ«māṃsaka thinker\, Kumārila (c. 550–650).  Kumārila points to an experience that he claims we all have\, termed 'I-cognition' (ahampratyaya)\, and argues\, against Cārvākas and Buddhists\, that what we encounter in that experience is the self.  Neither the Cārvākas nor the Buddhists deny that we have this kind of cognition\, but they dispute that its object is the self.  We will observe Kumārila's arguments against the Cārvāka view that its object is the body\, and then turn to his extended argument against the Buddhists.   \nPart II will give an account of some of the subsequent developments in the history of this particular issue.  There was unease among MÄ«māṃsakas themselves over how one thing (the self) could be both agent and object of one and the same cognition.  The tension within MÄ«māṃsā was particularly acute\, for they themselves argued against Buddhist idealism on the grounds that it is impossible for one thing (consciousness) to be both agent and object of cognition.  We will observe how the attempt to address this tension led to three significant modifications of Kumārila's view. \nContact: simon.brown@ashoka.edu.in

SUMMARY:Economics Department Weekly Seminar | Somdeep Chatterjee | 30th September 2026 | 1:40 PM
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We study how political competition affects economic development under a multi- party\, first-past-the-post system\, using a new measure of political competition — threat of coalition. A constituency is deemed competitive when the third- ranked candidate’s vote share exceeds the winning margin\, i.e.\, when the third – ranked candidate is ‘relevant’. Focusing on Indian state elections and using a regression discontinuity approach\, we find that constituencies with a ‘relevant’third witness a 1.3–3.6 percentage point increase in growth in luminosity density. As mechanisms\, we find that the presence of Relevant Thirds is associated with higher availability of public goods and lower crime. We rule out alternative explanations by showing muted effects when the coalition threat is not credible.

SUMMARY:Simulating Stress Laws under Extremal Dependence: Characterizing What An Input Model Must Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium Announcement \nSimulating Stress Laws under Extremal Dependence: Characterizing What An Input Model Must Preserve\n\n \n\nAnand Deo\nIndian Institute of Management Bangalore \n\n\n\nAbstract\nWe study stress-scenario generation for systems driven by multivariate heavy-tailed risk factors. Within regions where several losses are simultaneously large\, stress analysis concerns both the conditional law of risk factors and the most plausible configurations producing them. We show that both tasks share the same limiting tail law but require distinct\, nonnested validity criteria. Tail-measure preservation is necessary and sufficient for first-order validity of joint-stress probabilities and scaled conditional laws; tail-density preservation governs likelihood-based reverse stress testing. We develop SSGEN (Self-Similar Generative Estimation)\, a data-driven input model that exploits the polar decomposition of extremes by learning the angular law from intermediate exceedances and extrapolating radially through a Pareto law. We prove that SSGEN satisfies both criteria and derive convergence rates for the generated stressed law and reverse-stress solutions even without target-event observations. These guarantees transfer to decision problems based on stress-conditioned laws or likelihood-defined stress regions: optimal values and\, under uniqueness\, solutions converge. \n\n\nDate: Wednesday\, September 30\, 2026 \nTime: 01:30 PM \nVenue: AC-05-Lab-004 | Ramchandra Hall\, North Campus\, Ashoka University \n\n \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nScan the QR code or click here for event details \n\nEmail: scdlds@ashoka.edu.in Website: https://scdlds.ashoka.edu.in/
