SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Quantum mechanics is not only a theory of the microscopic world — it is also the foundation of a new generation of technologies. In particular\, the second quantum revolution promises technologies that surpass their classical counterparts in efficiency. In this talk\, I will explore recent developments in quantum computation and quantum communication\, focusing on how quantum effects can be explored to enhance computational power and enable fundamentally new approaches to communication. \nAbout the Speaker: Prof. Aditi Sen De graduated with Physics from Bethune College\, Kolkata\, and did her M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Calcutta University. She received her Ph.D. degree from University of Gdansk\, Poland. She did her postdocs at Leibniz University\, Germany as a Humbold research fellow and then in The Institute of Photonic Sciences at Barcelona\, Spain. She then joined Jawaharlal Nehru University as an Assistant Professor in 2008 before moving to Harishchandra Research Institute\, Allahabad in 2009\, where she is currently a Professor in Physics. Her main area of research includes quantum information and computation\, quantum communication including quantum cryptography\, quantum optics and many-body physics. She has received the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in the field of Physical Sciences in the year 2018. She is the first and so far the only female recipient of this prestigious prize in the field of Physical Sciences. In 2012\, she won the biennial Buti Foundation Award\, given by the Indian Physics Association to young scientists who have made outstanding contributions in the area of Theoretical Physics\, Astrophysics or Biophysics. \nWe look forward to your active participation.

SUMMARY:Economics Department Weekly Seminar | Puneet Arora | 14th October 2026 | 1:40 PM
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Policy interventions that disclose credentials\, qualifications\, or performance records are a common tool for reducing bias in evaluation\, but whether all evaluators credit the same signal equally is rarely tested directly. I examine this in a randomized field experiment with 970 first-year MBA students at an Indian business school\, who were randomly assigned to see either their instructor's name or a standardized profile with photograph\, doctoral institution and professional record before completing a teaching evaluation. The credential signal reached male and female students equally: measures of information receipt show no gender gap in recall. The signal was credited unequally. Male students raised their evaluations of male instructors by 0.28 standard deviations in response to the credentials; female students evaluating the same male instructors did not update\, creating a 0.34 standard deviation gap on the evaluation index. For female instructors\, the two student genders responded similarly\, and the asymmetry is not explained by stated beliefs about gendered access to academic careers. Whether making a signal visible is sufficient to produce an information intervention's intended effect\, or whether the same signal is reinterpreted differently by different evaluators\, has implications beyond classroom evaluations.
