SUMMARY:IR Department Distinguished Speaker Talk - 2026
DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of our initiative to foster inspired conversations\, supported by the Apte and Dalvie families.   \nHow Leaders Change and the Effects on Politics and Foreign Policies\nThis talk will present Professor Kaarbo’s research on the importance of leaders\, leader psychology and changes in leaders over time. Building on research on ageing\, experience\, learning\, and the psychological effects of power\, Professor Kaarbo will discuss how and why may leaders change\, and what consequences there might be for domestic and international politics. The presentation will include work on contemporary and historical leaders.  The project is multi-methodological\, using text analysis of leaders’ verbal material and case studies built on secondary sources. \nSpeaker: Juliet Kaarbo is Professor in the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews. She co-founded and serves as co- Director of the Scottish Council on Global Affairs.  Julie previously held posts at the University of Edinburgh\, the University of Kansas and the Graduate Institute of International Studies.  Professor Kaarbo’s research focuses on leader personality\, foreign policy decision making\, group dynamics\, parliaments and parties\, and national roles and has appeared in numerous high-ranking journals such as International Affairs\, Global Studies Quarterly\, International Studies Quarterly\, European Journal of International Relations\, International Studies Review\, Political Psychology\, European Political Science Review\, and Foreign Policy Analysis.   Her books and co-edited volumes include Coalition Politics and Cabinet Decision Making\, Domestic Role Contestation\, Foreign Policy\, and The Oxford Handbook of Foreign Policy Analysis.  Juliet was the 2018 Distinguished Scholar of Foreign Policy Analysis in the International Studies Association and recently was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship.
