SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium | The Extraordinary Science of the Ordinary World
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The French Nobel prize winner in Physics in 1991\, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes (1932-2007)\, holds a position in science that is\, in many ways\, unique. He presided over the creation of a new field\, that of “soft matter”\, intersecting physics\, chemistry\, biology\, applied mathematics and engineering. This is the science of the every-day world\, of materials as diverse as shaving foam\, ink\, sand\, plastics and soap. But he also thought about education more broadly\, including the need to move away from a culture of abstract mathematics in science as well as the importance of teaching the joy of science to young people\, emphasising that science is deeply human\, intuitive\, and driven by curiosity. Despite his fame in scientific circles\, and the accessibility of the topics he worked on –  the Nobel Prize committee called him "The Newton of our time" – de Gennes is not otherwise widely known\, a gap I'll address. \nAbout the Speaker: Prof. Gautam Menon is a Professor of Physics and Biology at Ashoka University. He served as Dean (Research) at Ashoka between 2022 and 2025 and was also Director of Ashoka’s Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability (3CS) during that period. He is a Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on “Strengthening the use of Epidemiological Modelling of Pandemic Diseases”\, a co-author of the “Lancet Commission on a Citizen-centred Health System for India” and a member of the WHO “Technical Advisory Group on Embedding Ethics in Health and Climate Change Policy.” \nHis research work\, spread over approximately 100 papers\, is in the broad areas of physics\, biophysics and epidemiology. Currently\, he works on a number of biophysical problems including nuclear architecture\, axonal transport\, collective cell migration and cell adhesion. The modelling of infectious disease and its implications for public policy is a long-standing interest. His group has developed BharatSim\, India’s first ultra-large-scale agent-based model for disease spread. His research has been funded by the European Union\, the BMGF\, CEFIPRA and the WHO\, as well as the DBT\, DST and DAE in India. He has lectured in universities and scientific conferences around the world and in India\, including in the USA\, Canada\, France\, Germany\, Switzerland\, Singapore\, the Netherlands and the UK. \nHe serves on the scientific review committees of several international and national agencies\, including the Human Frontier Science Program and the Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance\, as well as on a number of national committees. He was a Member of the Expert Group (Education) for the Science\, Technology and Innovation Policy of India (2020). \nWe look forward to your active participation.

SUMMARY:Economics Department Weekly Seminar | Parikshit Ghosh | 4th November 2026 | 1:40 PM
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We develop a labour market model in which workers are compensated in wages as well as workplace public goods such as safety\, group insurance\, leisure\, childcare\, etc. A critical assumption is the possibility of contract renegotiation after training costs have been sunk\, giving rise to a hold-up problem. Hold-up not only creates underemployment but also under-provision of workplace public goods. Wage subsidies and mandated minimum provision laws have a complementary effect — they boost both employment and working conditions. Unionization can also increase employment and efficiency. Our analysis presents an efficiency-based argument for intervention in the labour market\, such as introduction of statutory safety standards and work hour regulation.

SUMMARY:A new justice-centric human development classification for the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\, \nWe are delighted to invite you to the fourth talk of the Environmental Studies Colloquium Series Monsoon 2026. \nDate & Time: 4th November\, 6:30 p.m. (Online) \nTopic: A new justice-centric human development classification for the 21st century \nZoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/96037158394?pwd=faI01nDvEqjGHbKM0L2D2C9lP5nrR0.1 \nAbstract:  \nNordic countries are frequently positioned as the leaders of “sustainable development” but their high resource footprints presents a significant challenge. We propose a refined conceptual framework for sustainable development centring justice. Our analysis identifies Costa Rica\, Uruguay\, and Sri Lanka as having achieved the highest levels of scalable social progress. \nWe leverage this framework  to propose a new justice-oriented classification of human development that aligns with current research on environmental limits. This framework offers an alternative to the prevailing conception of a “developed country”\, and enables the identification of replicable development models. Its goal is to offer policymakers guidance toward more equitable and sustainable progress in the 21st century. \nSpeaker's Bio: \nChirag Dhara is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Krea University. He holds a PhD in Earth Science from the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry\, Germany and a second PhD in Photonics from the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona\, Spain. \nChirag’s work spans sustainability science and policy. Topics of ongoing research include near-term regional and global monsoon projections\, regional climate change\, climate performance assessments\, climate responsibility and finance\, human development and inequality\, physical limits to growth\, and sustainable transitions. \n  \nLooking forward to having you with us for the talk and engaging discussion. \nwarm regards\, \nEnvironmental Studies Department
