Poetry, Patterns, and Protest

Poetry in the space of protest is as old as it is new – today’s student population, especially in social media, uses it en masse. While various individual and social causes have found their words in poetry, this workshop looks at how poetic themes and structures come together. How have poets used traditional and innovative forms to express their ideas? What are the ways in which structure informs the theme?

The workshop is designed to use the form and flexibility of poetry to reflect upon our relationships with ourselves and the world that we must negotiate. Participants will be led through introspective discussions, word-associations, writing experiments, and examples of classical and experimental poetry. Guided through structural and thematic experiments, we hope to encourage reimagining and recombining the elements of poetry for our new, changing world.
