Title: Feeling Like An Impostor? The Effects of Affirmative Action on Minority Students in China

Speaker: Siddharth George, Assistant Professor, Boston University

Abstract: We study how being admitted via affirmative action affects minority students in China. Exploiting several unique features of Chinese college admissions, we estimate the causal effect of qualifying via affirmative action using an RD design. We compare students who narrowly qualify for leading Chinese colleges on merit against those who attend the same college but were admitted via affirmative action. We find that students admitted via affirmative action have (i) worse self-esteem and perceptions of their own ability, (ii) perform worse academically, (iii) weaker social networks, and (iv) less ambitious career plans. Collectively, our results support the idea that being admitted via affirmative action triggers impostor feelings that may have lasting impacts and highlight a new mechanism through which affirmative action may affect minority students.
