An online news website recently compiled a list of next-generation intellectuals which sparked a debate on who is a ‘public intellectual’.

“The problems with these lists is the focus on personalities rather than ideas.” says Dr. Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Vice-Chancellor, Ashoka University. “An intellectual is someone who goes beyond academic specialisation to articulate public reason – someone who believes that everyone is capable of being engaged by ideas”, he adds.
