Ph.D. Program in Biology
The Department of Biological Sciences at Ashoka University invites application for its Ph.D. program (Monsoon 2019) in interdisciplinary areas of biology. The biological research program is aided by state of the art research facilities and covers a wide number of topics, ranging from single molecules to organismal biology, including Evolutionary Biology, Animal Behavior, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Biophysics.
The PhD program at Ashoka University accepts candidates with a Masters in any basic science discipline, including biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and mathematics or BTech/MBBS MTech/MPharm degree in applied sciences such as medicine, engineering. We are particularly looking for candidates who enjoy research, who are highly motivated and can create and take forward their own ideas in research. We would value candidates who enjoy collaboration and forging work with a sense of team spirit.
To apply for the Biology PhD program, applicants will need to complete an online application form. Online applications should also include
a statement of research interests (maximum 2 pages), and
two letters of recommendation.
The research statement should briefly encapsulate your academic background, research training, and how the Ph.D program in biological sciences at Ashoka will enable the you to realize their future career goal/s. PhD admission will be based on a written test. However, candidates who have qualified the JGEEBILS/ BINC/ CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ GATE exam will be exempted from the written test, and can directly appear for the interview.
Please note that the written test will assess basic analytical skills and may include +2 level mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. There is no specified syllabus. We do not provide sample question papers.
PhD admission test and interviews will be held at the Ashoka University, Sonipat between 19th -21st June 2019. The exact date will be intimated to the candidates by first week of June.
Names of selected students will be published on the University website.
Once admitted, students should take coursework on a wide range of topics, including research methodology, as per university norms. At the end of two years, students should present and defend their dissertation proposal before a faculty committee. On successful completion of this process, the candidate will be formally registered for a Ph.D. Towards the end of 5th year, the candidate will defend the dissertation before a committee consisting of faculty from both within and outside Ashoka.
A fixed number of attractive PhD fellowships will be offered by Ashoka University to support the PhD students (as per the rules and regulations). The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of INR 35,000 per month, a contingency grant of INR 20,000 and offers extensive teaching opportunities.
The monthly stipend and annual contingency grant given to PhD students who receive other scholarships (from UGC, CSIR or a partner organization) will be decided based on terms covering the scholarship itself and as per the norms of the University.
Students will also be offered housing on campus (on availability). In case on-campus housing is not available, Rs. 7000 pm rent allowance will be paid towards off-campus housing
