PhD in the Physics Department

The Department of Physics at Ashoka University invites applications for its PhD program, starting in the monsoon semester (August) 2020. Currently, we invite applications only in soft-condensed matter physics, biophysics, statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. The Department's work in these areas is described in more detail in the faculty profiles listed below.

Candidates must have a master degree in Physics. A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate (or equivalent in any point system), both at the bachelor’s and master’s level, is required.

Research experience at the undergraduate or master’s-level, project work or internships should be highlighted. Candidates are typically expected to have qualified, at a level to be decided by Ashoka University, in one of the following national examinations: JEST, CSIR-UGC NET, and GATE. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who have not qualified in these examinations but with skills relevant to research, e.g. in experimental work, may be given an internal entrance examination. International candidates may also appear for this examination. All those shortlisted will be invited to an interview at the Ashoka University campus, Sonepat. The tentative examination/interview date is in second/third week of May 2020.

A fixed number of attractive PhD fellowships will be offered according to Ashoka University’s rules. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of INR 35,000 and an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000. Students will either be given on-campus accommodation or a rent allowance of INR 7000 per month.
