Shadab Farooq is an independent filmmaker and journalist from Jammu and Kashmir. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and did a Master’s in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia. His breakout student film on migration was a finalist at the Kolkata International Film Festival. With a strong commitment to amplifying marginalised voices, his work offers intimate portrayals of often overlooked communities. His documentary Only if the Baby Cries… won Best Documentary at the 28th Ji.hlava Festival and the TOTO Awards, was awarded an Honourable Mention Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance Film Festival, and is a finalist at the SIMA Awards. His photostory on the Indian farmers’ protests was also a finalist for the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Awards. Shadab seeks a year of unlearning and wonder at the YIF, hoping to weave new ideas, disciplines, and friendships into the evolving mosaic of his storytelling and search for meaning.
