Critical Inquiry and Expression

10 Months. 25:1 Fellow to Faculty Ratio.

The Critical Inquiry and Expression (CIE) module is an integral part of the YIF and runs in parallel to the core and elective coursework for most of the academic year. The following set of objectives guide this module:

1. Building critical dialogues and relations between the different texts, disciplines, and perspectives
2. Critically navigating the social, intellectual, ethical and emotional terrain of building their own perspective as they learn to respond to pertinent issues of our time
3. Developing linguistic agency to express their thought in conscious, critical, and contextually relevant forms
4. Facilitating meaningful reflection and cross-disciplinary synthesis throughout the learning journey

Final Draft: The YIF Writing Journal

The goal of Final Draft, the Annual YIF Journal of Writing, is to showcase both the range—in topic and genre—and strength of writing in a student body that is itself highly diverse in terms of its educational, disciplinary, professional, geographic, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Through the process of writing multiple drafts, student-authors discover their unique voice and recognise writing as an ongoing, open-ended activity as signalled by the title of the journal itself. As the Fellows learn to bring critical thinking tools to the drawing board, readers of Final Draft can witness a clear attempt by them to negotiate with texts and social phenomena as they make sense of the world around them.
