This is a graduate-level econometrics course focusing on causal identification. The course begins with a discussion of the Rubin-Causal model, and randomized controlled trials – the pinnacle for causal econometric designs. Subsequently, it moves to selection on observable designs, and the use of fixed effects to control for select unobservables. The second half of the course focuses on three key empirical techniques for causal identification: namely differences-in-difference, regression discontinuity designs, matching and instrumental variables. The course will focus mainly on the intuition behind causal identification and applying them in practice. A critical component of the course would be reading empirical academic papers. This would provide students with some context in the application of the empirical methods introduced in class. This course will focus on both theoretical knowledge as well as implementation of theory through software applications like STATA and real datasets.
