Ph.D. Programme in Physics

The Department of Physics at Ashoka University periodically invites applications for its Ph.D. program. Information about PhD recruitment will be made available on this page. The research areas covered by the department are described in more detail in the faculty profile pages. For the 2024 cycle of admissions, applications are currently open. Last date for applying online is June 16. Online interviews are scheduled for June 27 and 28. Selected candidates will be called for in-person interviews on July 11 and 12.

  • Eligibility

    Applicants with a Masters degree (M.Sc/ M. Tech): A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate (or equivalent in any point system), both at the bachelor’s and master’s level, is required.

    Applicants with a 4 years Bachelors degree (B.S./ B. Tech): A minimum of 75% marks in aggregate (or equivalent in any point system) is required.

  • How to apply

    Applicants should complete the online application form available here . They are required to supply a brief statement of research interests (maximum 1 page) and two letters of recommendation. Research experience at the undergraduate or master’s-level, project work or internships should be highlighted. Candidates interested in experimental physics should describe relevant experience and interests. Recommendation letters should be emailed, with the candidate’s name in the subject line, to physics.phd@ashoka.edu.in.

     

  • Selection

    Candidates are typically expected to have qualified, at a level to be decided by Ashoka University, in one of the following national examinations: JEST, CSIR-UGC NET, and GATE. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who have not qualified in these examinations but with skills relevant to research, e.g. in experimental work, may be given an internal entrance examination. International candidates may also appear for this examination. All those shortlisted will be invited to an interview at the Ashoka University campus, Sonepat.

  • Funding

    A fixed number of attractive Ph.D. fellowships will be offered according to Ashoka University’s rules. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of INR 50,000 (plus an HRA of INR 10,000) and an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000. Students will either be given accommodation by the University OR a rent allowance of INR 10,000 per month.
