The Department of Biology, Ashoka University, promotes an academic culture that engages intellectual curiosity and fosters interdisciplinary perspectives. As a department, we take multi-dimensional approaches to study biology across various scales. These range from molecules to cells, tissues to individuals, and organisms to ecosystems. The department is built on the foundations of Chemistry and Physics. It also draws expertise from other disciplines like data sciences, climate & environmental sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students and faculty at Ashoka are equal partners in this journey. Our collective aim is to generate new knowledge and explore its applications to address social problems.
The Department of Biology also hosts the Trivedi School of Biosciences with the help of a generous donation from Mr. Ashok Trivedi. The school promotes advanced research in Synthetic Biology, Data Science, and emerging areas in disease biology. It will also focus on developing innovative pedagogical methods in Biology.

The Ashoka Journal of Biosciences is a student-led, reviewed journal covering biology research and communication conducted by undergraduates at Ashoka University. Aligned with the growth of Ashoka University's biosciences community, the journal aims to communicate new ideas and perspectives in an open, accessible, and stimulating manner.
Ashoka’s Biology research initiatives are aided by the University’s state-of-the-art research facilities. The department supports experiments ranging from single-molecule studies to ecological studies. The department’s research projects are briefly segmented into four categories:
Biophysics & Biochemistry; Cell & Developmental Biology; Computational & Mathematical Biology; and Behaviour, Ecology & Evolution.
Ashoka’s Biology laboratories are fully-equipped with essential and advanced instruments which facilitate innovative research projects. The facilities available to the Biology department include: Open Lab Facility, Insect Culture Facility, Fish Facility, Plant Research Facility, Analytical Instrumentation Facility, and Ashoka Imaging Facility.
Ashoka’s entire department of Biology is engaged in creating new knowledge which can have far-reaching effects globally. Click on the tab below to read different publications from recent years.
