Sustainability at Ashoka

Ashoka University is a pioneer in its focus on providing a liberal education at par with the best in the world. The aim at Ashoka is to help students become well-rounded individuals who can think critically about issues from multiple perspectives, communicate effectively and become leaders with a commitment to public service. Our endeavour is to achieve academic excellence along with a focus towards environmental sustainability. We not only focus on preparing the students for a promising social and professional future but also want to imbibe in our students, faculty and staff the moral responsibility towards a sustainable environment. We at Ashoka believe in contributing to environment sustainability along with institutional growth.

The UN General Assembly’s 17 Goals for sustainable Development provide focused priorities that we need to work towards for the well-being of the planet and its people. The policy sets out different pathways in terms of climate, gender, food and water, quality education and many other imperatives that require urgent attention.

Ashoka University is conscious of the importance and urgency of these priorities. The University’s commitment towards sustainability goals is reflected through the work done within the academic, departments, centres, student clubs and societies as well as by the key sectors of the administration. The orchestrated response has created a culture of commitment in working towards the goals of sustainable development.

Inclusion and diversity are central to Ashoka’s vision of creating a holistic and nurturing environment. Academic excellence and inclusion are co-dependent. To discover the next breakthrough in science or solve complex social problems, we need to harness the potential of students from different backgrounds. Since the last academic year, many significant steps have been taken to enhance diversity across the University. And while much work still remains, celebrating every milestone is important to us.

The investment policy objective is to manage the cash flow in such a way that the funds so invested can help acquire assets for the growth of the University. While the guiding principle of Ashoka is to conserve capital & generate return, whether through income or capital growth, with which to further the work of Ashoka; The University believes that in investing its funds, regard must be made to social, environmental and governance issues.

Ashoka University was formed with a philosophy of collective philanthropy by a group of like-minded individuals and institutions. Fundraising activity is monitored by the Board of Trustees, who meet every quarter. The Board of Trustees defines the goals & tracks the fundraising efforts.

To facilitate continuous improvement and process efficiencies, the University shall invest in sustainable procurement spend and impact data, life cycle costing, cost-benefit, and/or supplier evaluation tracking and reporting tools as best practices in sustainable procurement metrics and data capabilities development.

Ashoka University takes great pride in calling itself a sustainability oriented university focusing on inclusion, diversity, and environmental sustainability. This reflects in, not only our pedagogy and infrastructural practices, but also student-led initiatives. Ashoka University students selected for prestigious UN Millennium Fellowship

Students from Ashoka University are selected every year for the prestigious UN Millennium Fellowship, a joint collaboration by United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and Millennium Campus Network (MCN).

The projects include working on enabling quality education, need of water conservation, assisting women and girls in rural areas to set up their businesses, conducting election at the grassroots level in making Indian politics more accessible to younger people, building a network of people to stay connected through shared empathy and vulnerability in order to keep a check on mental health.
