India in Asian Geopolitics

This twenty-two lecture course examines changes and constants in the geopolitics affecting India’s foreign and security policies since independence in 1947. It first considers chronologically the factors that affected Indian policy, its international context, and the role of personalities, structures and strategic culture in the making of that policy as it evolved over seven decades. It then focuses on the present, on the new geopolitics of Asia and India’s interests and policy choices today. The course concentrates on India in Asia and considers the dynamic between India’s interests, the changing environment, and India’s growing capabilities as expressed in the practice of Indian policy.
