Collective Moral Responsibility

Ashoka Economics Department Eminent Speaker Series Public Lecture| Kaushik Basu | 25th January 2023 | AC 04-304

  • This event has passed.
Abstract:  Moral responsibility is usually associated with the behavior of individuals. Yet, in popular discourse, we often talk about the moral responsibility of groups, such as nations, political parties, and even leaders (in plural). Drawing on some writings in philosophy and basic concepts from game theory, it is possible to give formal shape to the concept of collective moral responsibility. In my lecture I hope to present some of these models and draw attention to the paradoxes that they give rise to. I shall also touch on the larger theme of prior agreements and conventions to improve group behavior.
