The course will focus on why and how political institutions and culture affect economic outcomes and how they are shaped by economic development and policy choices. Though the course will begin with some discussion on classical political economy and theoretical concepts in political economy, it will focus on the recent research papers in the field. We will focus on the conceptual basis for the questions we study, how to model them theoretically and how to test these ideas empirically. We will discuss the methods and findings of the empirical papers and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
