Ashoka University’s undergraduate course curriculum is taught across three semesters: Spring, Summer and Monsoon (Fall). Courses are broadly divided into three categories – Foundation Courses (core curriculum), Major & Minor Courses and Co-Curricular Courses.

Foundation courses are offered in all semesters and do not have prerequisites. Offerings in other categories differ in each semester. Some higher level major/minor courses may have prerequisites.

In this course, we will discuss the important concepts in Mechanism Design, Auction Theory, and Matching Theory. This course will be a mixture of theory and applications. In the theory part, We will cover the formulations and fundamental results. Specifically, we will discuss concepts such as revelation principle, implementation of mechanisms, incentive compatibility. We will cover the standard auction settings and revenue analysis. Finally, we discuss different types of matching settings and the fundamental Gale-Shapley algorithm.
For the applications part, we will have in-depth discussions about real life applications where this theory have been used. We will focus on three applications: (1) Spectrum Auctions, in which the government auctions the electromagnetic spectrum (bandwidth) to the highest bidding cellular companies, (2) Sponsored Search Auctions, in which companies like Google auctions the advertisement spots to firms for each search query of the consumer, (3) Kidney Exchange problem in which Kidney donor-receiver pairs are matched while satisfying the compatibility restrictions.
Some of the discussion about applications will be part of the student presentations.
