Ashoka University’s undergraduate course curriculum is taught across three semesters: Spring, Summer and Monsoon (Fall). Courses are broadly divided into three categories – Foundation Courses (core curriculum), Major & Minor Courses and Co-Curricular Courses.

We draw on research in diverse fields—decision theory, behavioral and stochastic choice theory, game theory, learning, social networks, and causal Bayesian networks—to study ways of modeling boundedly rational agents. The motivation for the exercise draws from the observation that the epistemic and cognitive demands that standard theories of decision-making and strategic interactions make may be too demanding. This observation has a rich tradition in Economics, going back to the work of Herbert Simon in the 1950s, and the course will draw inspiration from this impressive body of research. The course will also demonstrate that bounded rationality has important implications for applications in several areas of economics.
In terms of your past training in Micro 1 and 2, you will be familiar with the two building blocks of theoretical economic reasoning: decision theory and game theory. In the way these have been presented to you in your compulsory courses, it has come equipped with a certain “rationality apparatus.” This course will provide you with the opportunity to unpack this apparatus and critically engage with it.
