Ashoka University’s undergraduate course curriculum is taught across three semesters: Spring, Summer and Monsoon (Fall). Courses are broadly divided into three categories – Foundation Courses (core curriculum), Major & Minor Courses and Co-Curricular Courses.

Why do some nations remain poor while others achieve lasting prosperity? Can targeted public policy overcome structural barriers to development? This course tackles these questions at the heart of development economics. We investigate how markets, institutions, education, and health interact to shape economic growth, poverty, and inequality. Drawing on contemporary research and real-world interventions in low- and middle-income countries, students evaluate both theoretical models and empirical evidence — emphasising causal inference and rigorous econometric methods. By the end, students will be able to analyse development challenges critically and assess the policy tools available to address them.
Designed for third-year economics majors, the course assumes prior completion of Microeconomics I and Econometrics.
