Spatial Economics

Code: ECO-3509-1

Faculty: Priyam Verma

In this course, we will understand the primitives of a spatial economy and how fundamental forces shape the distribution of economic activities across cities, regions, and countries. We will learn to model location decisions by households and firms and why they gravitate towards large cities, especially in developing countries. We will study the use of GIS software to map infrastructure networks into spatial models. In the presence of congestion, we will understand the effect of trans- portation improvement on spatial reallocation of economic activity. We will delve into measuring agglomeration and amenity spillovers, both of which combined can explain the rise and fall of cities. At last, we will learn formulas (sufficient statistics) to compute gains from lowering spatial frictions in a trading economy.
