If you're curious about how production functions operate in practice, how consumers respond to prices and product features, how firms compete through pricing and product attributes, and how market barriers influence firm entry, then this course will equip you with the tools to explore these questions using real-world data. We will focus on understanding how markets function by estimating production functions, consumer demand, marginal costs, and barriers to entry—the four foundational components of modern Empirical Industrial Organization. You will learn how to estimate these components using advance econometric techniques, including control functions and discrete choice models. Estimation can be conducted in R, Python, or Stata, all of which offer standard packages for these methods. The course emphasizes hands-on, policy-relevant analysis to help you quantitatively assess how firm behavior and regulation shape market outcomes and social welfare. Whether you're aiming for a career in industry, academia, or policy, this course provides a strong foundation for understanding how data-driven decisions are made.
